Disposing of Junk in Fairfax VA
Named by Forbes Magazine as number 3 on the list of “Top 25 Places to Live Well,” Central Fairfax is truly a vibrant community. Located just outside of the nation’s capital, it is a richly historic place, with plenty to see and do. Unfortunately, one of those many things you can see just so happens to be a lot of junk.
Especially with springtime upon us, we all are starting to notice that we’ve got a lot of old, unused stuff lying around that we just need to get rid of.
But what on earth are we supposed to do with it all, and where are we supposed to take it? Sadly, many people answer this question by just dumping it on the streets and making it the community’s problem instead.
There are quite a few solutions to getting rid of all your old junk that don’t have to include creating an eyesore for the neighbors.

Donate Furniture & Appliances to Charity
Furniture and small household appliances can be donated to Fairfax charities such as Share or Lorton Community Center. Items need to be in very good, working condition in order to be donated. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if you wouldn’t buy it, it probably shouldn’t be donated to someone else.
What items charities are able and willing to accept largely depends on what they currently have and are in need of. You’ll need to do some calling around to find out which of your unwanted items you will be able to donate. Some charities do offer pickup services for the items you donate, depending on their service area.
Because many charity volunteers only work during certain hours, usually on Saturdays, it can be difficult to schedule a pickup or drop-off at a time that they are available that is also convenient for you. While this method reduces landfill waste and helps those in need, it does require a considerable amount of research and planning.
Throw Away Old & Unused Items
If your trash is regularly picked up by the county, you can decide to put your junk out on the curb for it to be picked up and hauled to the landfill or recycling center. However, you will need to call and schedule this in advance.
If the items are larger than about 5 feet x 6 feet, you will be charged a minimum fee of $60. The total fee will depend on the volume of the items you need to have picked up.
Even though the county does offer curbside pickup of junk items, there are certain rules and regulations involved, depending on what type of items you are setting out.
- Bulky Furniture
Things like sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards need to be separated in piles by type of material. If any of the items are longer than 6 feet, they will not be picked up.
- Old Appliances
Refrigerators, wine cellars, ovens, stoves, dishwashers, air conditioners, and washers/dryers need to be handled carefully so as not to damage any tubing. Any batteries, propane, or gas tanks cannot be included. Appliances that contain refrigerant will have to be picked up by a special truck and should be in a pile separate from any other items to be picked up. You’ll also need to remove the doors from any appliances before taking them to the street.
- Outdated Electronics
Whether you live in the city or county, you will need to drop off any electronics such as computers, computer equipment, cables, mobile devices, stereos, and televisions to the e-cycling station at the I-66 Transfer Station Complex or I-95 Landfill Complex. You will need to show proof of residence to be able to drop these items off, and there is a limit of 10 items per visit. Drop-offs of electronics are only accepted during certain hours, so you’ll want to call ahead before making the trip out there. Make sure you delete any personal files or information from these items as well.
- Sinks, Bathtubs, Toilets, etc.
Large bathroom or kitchen items like this that are made of metal, fiberglass, or porcelain will not be picked up and will have to be taken to the transfer station or landfill.
- Gas and Charcoal Grills
As long as they are no longer than 6 feet and are without a gas tank, grills can be picked up in a scheduled collection with any other metal items. Gas or propane tanks have to be taken to the landfill or transfer station for disposal.

Fairfax Garbage Disposal & Junk Removal
A major problem with throwing your old exercise equipment or unwanted furniture out with the trash is that due to the county’s Clean Streets Initiative, if the items are left at the curb for 10 days, they will automatically be picked up and you will be charged a minimum of $250, plus costs for labor, equipment, and disposal.
If you refuse or are not able to pay the fees, the county will place a lien on your home.
The worst part about this is that anyone can call at any time and report you for having junk sitting at your curb, setting this nasty process in motion. Even if your trash is usually picked up by a private company, you are still subject to the Clean Streets Initiative regulations.
There are several different private companies throughout Fairfax, VA that provide regular trash pickup for residents not eligible for county waste collection.
If your trash is usually picked up by one of these companies, you will need to contact the company that picks up your trash to find out if they offer junk hauling, what items they will accept, any regulations, and how much extra they will charge you.
If you decide to drop your junk off at the I-66 Transfer Station Complex in Fairfax, VA or the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton, VA you will need to provide proof of residency in order to dump your stuff there.
You will also be charged a fee for junk disposal, which you can only pay by using cash, MasterCard, or Visa. They will not accept checks or any other card types.
The minimum fee is $10, but since the disposal fee is based on volume or weight (depending on what you’re dropping off and how they decide to measure the load), you’ll be looking at somewhere around $530 to drop off a truckload of junk.
When you factor in the cost of renting a truck and the high amount of gas it will use, this can end up being an expensive undertaking.
You’ll also need to find a friend or two to help you, and the process of renting the truck, getting everything from where it is and over to the truck, loading, and unloading will easily eat up an entire day.

Call a Local Junk Hauler to Get Rid of Junk
There are a few companies in Fairfax who specialize in picking up and disposing of junk items. Using a junk removal service to haul away your junk for you instead of doing it yourself will save a lot of time and energy.
The way this process works is that you call one of these companies, they schedule an on-site estimate with you, come out to see what items you need to have removed, provide you with a price quote, schedule a pickup day, then come back out on that scheduled day to pick up and haul away your junk items.
While this can be a great solution to getting rid of your old and unwanted items, there can be a few drawbacks involved.
It can take a few days, sometimes weeks, between the time you call a company and when they are able to complete the pickup. You will have to schedule them to come out and give you an estimate at a time that you are both available. Then you will have to schedule another appointment for them to send a truck out to pick up your items.
Keep in mind that both of these appointments will require that you be at home while they are there, meaning you may have to take time off work or shift your personal schedule around to accommodate them.
More often than not, the person who provides the estimate will “low-ball” it so that you are given a price that is enticing enough for you to book their service.
Then, when the team comes out and loads your junk onto their truck, you are hit with a higher price along with unexpected fees, which you are expected to pay on the spot.
