The Problem

Getting junk off Lopez takes more than good intentions

You look up the county's rules, call a couple of haulers, and wait on callbacks that may never come. Meanwhile the old couch sits on the porch and the barn stays full for another season.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

There's no city-run bulk pickup on an unincorporated island, so a scheduled municipal pickup may not exist where you live. Self-hauling to the county's island drop-off site means loading everything yourself, checking which items are accepted, and planning around limited hours.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many off-island haulers want to see the job in person before quoting, and getting a crew over by ferry doesn't come cheap or quick. Pricing by the truckload leaves you guessing about the final bill until the work is already done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Local reuse and thrift options do good work, and they can only accept items in good shape that they have room for. Worn mattresses, broken appliances, and weathered outdoor gear usually get turned away, so you still have to deal with whatever's left.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

For a garage cleanout or one tired guest room, a roll-off container is more than you need. Delivery to a rural lot depends on access and timing, a long gravel driveway can be tough on a heavy truck, and you still carry everything to the bin yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Pickup Options

Set out by the drive or carried out from inside

Curbside is the simpler choice if you can set items out by the driveway or near the road first, but that can be a lot of work on properties where the house sits far back from the gate. For a packed garage, a vacation cottage between guests, or a shed full of old tools, choose full-service so your Loaders carry everything out from where it sits.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Lopez Island, from Fisherman Bay to Richardson

Hauling an old sofa or a pile of barn lumber usually means borrowing a truck, then either a ferry trip or a long drive to the island's transfer site. That is a lot of day for one load. Your Loaders handle the lifting and loading at your place, and they enjoy showing up for Lopez neighbors.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items are hard to move alone, and on a small island the question of where they end up matters just as much as getting them out. On Lopez Island, your Loader sorts each item by condition.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods in good, clean condition may be donated when possible and where local options allow. Your Loader sets them aside for that path, though you should not expect any paperwork.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but still hold usable materials, like metal frames or old electronics, may be recycled where available. Your Loader separates them when local and off-island options allow.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged or contaminated bulky items, such as soaked mattresses or broken outbuilding furniture, are taken for responsible disposal. Your Loader loads them, and the final destination depends on what San Juan County and nearby facilities accept.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Lopez Island disposal rules most residents don't know

Unsorted recyclables or wrong-day drop-offs can mean paying garbage fees or hauling items back home, and these are the rules that apply on Lopez Island in San Juan County.

Rule 01

Wet cardboard does not qualify for free recycling on Lopez

Corrugated cardboard recycles free at Lopez Solid Waste only when clean and dry, with no grease, paint, or wax coating. Tape and staples can stay on. In a damp island winter, keep boxes covered before the trip to the Dump.

Rule 02

Take It or Leave It staff approve every donated item

The free store at the Lopez Dump takes donations only on Saturdays and Mondays, and staff must approve each item. Cribs, car seats, bike helmets, toilets, and ceiling fans are not accepted, and rejected items become yours to remove or pay to discard.

Rule 03

Fluorescent tubes no longer recycle free at the Lopez Dump

Washington's LightRecycle program ended at the end of 2025, but fluorescent bulbs and tubes contain mercury and still cannot go in the trash. Bring them free to a San Juan County Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up or pay a per-item recycling fee at the Lopez Dump.

Rule 04

Litter collected from beaches and roadsides is dumped free

Lopez Solid Waste lets anyone who picks up litter on a public beach, roadway, or trail dump it at no charge. When storms wash debris onto the shoreline, residents can clear their stretch of beach without paying disposal fees.

Rule 05

Camp-style propane canisters must wait for a hazardous waste round-up

The Lopez Dump accepts only empty BBQ-style propane tanks of 10 gallons or less, for a disposal fee. Small camp-style canisters are not accepted there and must be stored safely until a San Juan County Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up.

Rule 06

Leftover paint drop-off at the Lopez Dump is Sundays only

Lopez Solid Waste is a PaintCare site, taking household latex and oil-based paints that meet PaintCare guidelines for free reuse and recycling on Sundays only. On other days, store cans safely until Sunday rather than adding them to garbage.

Not through a city program, since Lopez Island is unincorporated and has no municipal bulk pickup. Residents haul junk to Lopez Solid Waste Disposal at 2419 Fisherman Bay Rd, (360) 468-2555. It's open Mon, Fri, Sat and Sun, 10am to 3pm, so confirm hours first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Lopez Island starts at $95, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking. Dropping items at the transfer station yourself costs less in cash, but it takes your time and a trip.

Same-day and next-day pickup are offered when availability allows, but a rural island can have fewer open slots than the mainland. Enter your address during booking to see which times are open for Lopez Village, Richardson, Port Stanley, or elsewhere on the island.

For curbside or driveway pickups, no. Leave items out with access notes. For items inside the home, someone should be there, or you can leave access instructions when booking. Your Loader will contact you before arriving.

Hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, and chemicals generally aren't accepted by junk haulers. Lopez Solid Waste Disposal runs the island's transfer station and recycling center, so call (360) 468-2555 about what it takes and any fees before you load up.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle materials whenever options allow, depending on acceptance. Lopez has local outlets like the Lopez Thrift Shop on Tower Dr. and the TIOLI free store at the transfer station. Whatever can't be reused goes to proper disposal.

Book online, choose your items and a pickup window, and see the exact price before you confirm. On pickup day your Loader calls ahead, then removes the items from inside or outside. Because Lopez is reached by ferry from Anacortes, scheduling may depend on ferry timing.

If you have a truck and time, the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal transfer station is usually the cheaper route for small loads. A hauler such as LoadUp, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, or Junk King makes sense for heavy items or no vehicle. LoadUp prices per item online, while truckload haulers typically estimate by volume.
