Island County says refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, wine coolers and air conditioners contain powerful greenhouse gases. Its hazardous waste program won't take them. They must be recycled at the Coupeville or Camano facilities, and all food must be removed first.
Washington law (RCW 70.93) requires counties to charge a fee for uncovered or unsecured loads, and Island County charges it at its disposal facilities. Tarping and tying down a cleanout load before you drive avoids the fee and keeps debris off the road.
Computers, monitors and televisions contain lead, cadmium and mercury. E-Cycle Washington, paid for by electronics manufacturers, recycles them instead of sending them to the trash.
