The Problem

Charlottesville has junk options, just not easy ones

You search online, call the city about pickup, and request a few hauler quotes. One calls back with a vague number, another never replies. Meanwhile the weekends slip by and the junk stays exactly where it was.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs can work if your items qualify and your timing fits theirs. You usually have to request it ahead of time, follow rules on what qualifies, and drag everything to the curb yourself. Steep driveways and basement stairs make that last step the hard one.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come look before they'll give you a number, so you have to block off time for a visit. Then the price depends on how much of the truck you fill, which leaves you guessing until the load is already on board.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Local donation options need stock they can actually resell, so stained upholstery, worn mattresses, and broken appliances often get turned away. Even when they'll take usable items, you still have to load them up and haul them there yourself.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster makes sense for a full renovation, but not for a cluttered spare room. You may need placement approval, a delivery and pickup window, and space on a narrow street, and the neighbors will be looking at it the entire time.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Set it at the curb or leave it where it sits

Curbside works when the item is already outside, like bagged yard debris waiting at the bottom of a sloped driveway. If a treadmill is wedged in an upstairs room of an older rental and steep front steps make moving it yourself a gamble, choose full-service and your Loaders bring it out from where it sits.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Charlottesville, on both sides of the 250 Bypass

Charlottesville's hills and tight streets were never designed for a borrowed pickup with a box spring sticking out, and Route 29 traffic doesn't help. Your Loader handles the stairs, the steep driveway, and the lifting, so your afternoon stays yours. Showing up for this town's neighbors is the part your Loaders like best.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items rarely fit in a trunk, and Charlottesville's hillside streets and tight parking make self-hauling harder still. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, so usable pieces and recyclables stay out of the landfill when local options allow.

Donation Pickup

Furniture, sporting goods, and household items in good, clean condition may go to a local donation option when possible. Your Loader carries them out and can take usable pieces along.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Items that are worn or damaged but still hold useful materials, such as metal frames, appliances, or electronics, may be taken to a recycling option where available. Availability depends on the item and local programs.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Charlottesville disposal rules most residents don't know

Items Charlottesville won't collect stay at the curb, and city code requires pulling uncollected bulk items back within 12 hours. These rules apply in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Rule 01

Sofas and mattresses need a prepaid pickup or a free drop-off day

Charlottesville's Large Item Pickup serves only addresses with city curbside trash service, and the fee is paid up front through the Treasurer's Office before a date is scheduled. Rivanna Solid Waste Authority also runs free furniture and mattress collection days at Ivy twice a year.

Rule 02

Rechargeable devices have a free fire-safe drop-off at Ivy

Crushed or damaged lithium batteries can undergo thermal runaway and have sparked fires at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center. Residents can drop them off there free. If a battery can't be removed, the whole device is accepted if it fits a five-gallon bucket.

Rule 03

Fall leaves go to the curb loose, never bagged

Charlottesville's vacuum trucks visit each neighborhood three times per leaf season and collect loose leaves only. Rake piles no more than three days early, keep brush and grass clippings out, and leave storm drains, hydrants, and curb ramps clear.

Rule 04

Renovation debris is barred from the city's Large Item Pickup

City code excludes contractor spoils, including construction materials and demolition materials, plus dirt, rock, and asbestos, from Charlottesville's Large Item Pickup. The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority's Ivy center accepts construction and demolition debris instead.

Rule 05

Big appliances have free drop-off days twice a year

Rivanna Solid Waste Authority holds free appliance collection days at Ivy for Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and Scottsville residents, accepting refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, kitchen stoves, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and heat pumps. Commercial participation is prohibited.

Rule 06

Tree limbs qualify for pickup, but logs and roots do not

Charlottesville has no curbside yard waste service outside leaf season. Its fee-based Large Item Pickup takes brush and tree limbs, but city code excludes logs and contractor tree trimmings or roots. Ivy accepts grindable vegetative materials instead.

Not unless it fits in your trash container or is scheduled. The City offers a fee-based curbside Large Item Pickup for bulky things like furniture, appliances and tree limbs. Items put out without a scheduled pickup risk being treated as illegal dumping.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Charlottesville starts at $85, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. Your exact total is confirmed before booking.

Often, depending on Loader availability for your address and time of day. Enter your address during booking to see live openings. For curbside jobs you don't need to be home, and for indoor pickups someone should be there or you can leave access notes.

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority runs the Ivy Material Utilization Center, which takes household waste from city and Albemarle County residents for a fee. Fees are charged by weight with a minimum charge, so a small load is cheap if you have a truck and time to haul it.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Local options include Habitat for Humanity's ReStore on Harris Street, which takes furniture, appliances and building materials. Anything that can't be donated or recycled goes to proper disposal.

You pick your items and enter your Charlottesville address online, then choose a time window and see your price upfront. Your Loader gives notice before arriving, carries the items out, and loads them. The confirmed price is what you pay.

For a single bulky item you can wait on, the City's fee-based Large Item Pickup can be the cheaper route. A private service makes more sense when you need a specific day, indoor carry-out, or several items gone at once without scheduling around the City's routes.

Mainly pricing and booking. Traditional haulers usually price by truck volume and often confirm the total on site. LoadUp prices per item online, so the total is set before anyone arrives. For large cleanouts, a truckload hauler may suit you better.
