The Problem

Reading has options for junk, just not easy ones

You check the town website, call the DPW, and leave messages with a few haulers. One quotes a vague range, another never calls back. Meanwhile the pile in the garage stays right where it was.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Municipal pickup schedules can handle a lot, but programs like these often limit which items qualify, ask you to arrange it ahead of time, and expect everything at the curb. If the item is still in your basement or your deadline is this week, that may not fit.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to see the job in person before quoting, then price by fractions of a truckload you can't easily picture. You agree to a number, but the final total often isn't settled until everything is already on their truck.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Charities have to be choosy about condition, so stained upholstery, worn mattresses, and broken pieces often get turned away. Even accepted items usually need to be dropped off by you, which still means lifting, loading, and finding a vehicle big enough.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off makes sense for a gut renovation, not a cleared-out spare room. You may need to check permit rules, plan around delivery and pickup windows, give up the driveway for days, and still carry every item out yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Reading, from the Ipswich River to the Wakefield line

Anyone with a New England basement knows the math: steep stairs, a low ceiling, and a sleeper sofa that went down easier than it will come up. Add a nor'easter to the forecast and the dump run loses its charm. Your Loaders carry it up and out, and honestly, they like showing up for Reading.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items pile up fast in Reading basements, garages, and attics, so where they end up matters. Your Loader sorts by condition, aiming to keep usable pieces in circulation and limit what goes to disposal.

Local Disposal Rules

The Reading disposal rules most residents don't know

Under Reading's automated collection, items in the wrong container or on the banned list get left at the curb, so these rules for Reading in Middlesex County matter.

Rule 01

Brush over eight feet won't be accepted at the compost center

Reading's Compost Center accepts leaves, grass clippings, and yard waste only from residents with a valid sticker, and commercial vehicles are excluded. Tree trimmings are capped at eight feet long and eight inches thick, with no construction debris, pressure-treated lumber, or concrete.

Rule 02

Mattresses and box springs are banned from Massachusetts trash

MassDEP's waste ban requires mattresses to be recycled, so Reading contracts with Tough Stuff Recycling for paid pickup or drop-off. Curbside mattresses need a bag, free from DPW with proof of scheduling; drop-offs at the DPW garage don't.

Rule 03

Automated carts mean overflow trash stays at the curb

Starting July 6, 2026, Reading's collection is fully automated, and trash or recycling placed in anything other than your Town-issued carts will not be collected. Bulk items now require scheduling and fees directly with Republic Services.

Rule 04

TVs and computer monitors are barred from trash and recycling

Televisions and CRT computer monitors are not allowed in Reading's regular trash or recycling and must be collected curbside by appointment. Most other electronics can go to the DPW drop-off, though that site excludes computer monitors and TVs.

Rule 05

Extra moving boxes have their own drop-off at DPW

Under automated collection, everything in Reading's recycling cart must be placed loose, so flatten boxes to fit. When a move produces more cardboard than the cart holds, the Town provides a recycling drop-off area for extra cardboard at the DPW garage.

Rule 06

Snow blowers and ride-on mowers need preparation before pickup

Household appliances are not allowed with regular trash in Reading and require a paid, scheduled curbside pickup through Republic Services. The Town's list includes snow blowers and ride-on lawn mowers, which require preparation, and refrigerators and freezers need doors removed.

Only what your regular trash and recycling service accepts. Reading's curbside program is run through the DPW with a contracted hauler, and bulky or restricted items often have their own rules. Check with the Reading DPW before putting anything large out.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Reading starts at $105, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee and each additional item is a flat add-on, with the exact total confirmed before booking.

Often, yes. Same-day or next-day pickup is offered when you book before noon, depending on Loader availability in your area. Enter your address during booking to see which times are open for your Reading neighborhood.

No. Since October 2022 the trash hauler no longer takes them because Massachusetts banned mattresses from the trash. Reading contracts with Tough Stuff Recycling, which charges $65 for curbside pickup or $33 for drop off at the DPW garage, per piece.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill. Whenever options allow, furniture and household goods go to local donation partners, and recyclable materials go to recyclers. Acceptance varies, so anything that can't be donated or recycled is disposed of properly.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. You can leave items out and add access notes when you book. For items inside your home, someone should be there or you can give entry instructions. Your Loader contacts you before arriving.

You pick your items online, see the price, and choose a pickup window. On pickup day a Loader arrives, removes the items, and you pay the confirmed total. The price is set before booking, not estimated at your door.

Mainly the pricing model. Traditional haulers usually charge by truckload and may give a final quote on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a full-truck cleanout, a truckload hauler can still be a good fit.
