The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Wainaku takes more than it should

You look up county rules, call around for quotes, and wait on haulers who never call back. A few weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting in the carport, still waiting for someone to deal with it.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

County-scheduled collection can work if your timing lines up and your items qualify. Many programs limit what they accept, usually turning away appliances with refrigerants, hazardous materials, and renovation debris. Most also expect you to get everything to the roadside yourself, which is hard on a steep driveway.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to look at the job in person before they give you a number, and that number is often based on how much of the truck you fill. You don't really know what you'll pay until they've loaded everything and the price is hard to argue with.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers need things they can actually resell, so stained, broken, or worn-out items usually get turned away. In a wet climate, mildew alone can rule out upholstered pieces. Usable items may find a new home when local options allow, but plenty of junk won't.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container is built for whole-house projects, not a few bulky pieces. You plan around delivery and pickup dates, might need a permit, and lose driveway or street space for days. On a narrow lot, it can block neighbors, and you still do all the lifting.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Wainaku, and the whole Hamakua Coast side of Hilo

Hilo rain doesn't care that you meant to haul that old dresser to the transfer station on Saturday. Soggy cardboard and sagging piles don't help, and neither does a sloped driveway. Your Loader does the lifting and carrying, and we like showing up for Wainaku neighbors who'd rather spend the weekend dry.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Big, bulky items are hard to move on your own, and what happens to them afterward matters in Wainaku. A Loader can sort items by condition, so usable pieces have a chance at reuse and less ends up in disposal.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods that are clean and in good shape may be donated when local options allow. Your Loader can set them aside, though a donation receipt is not something to count on.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but not fit for reuse may be separated for recycling where available. Your Loader can pull out metal or other materials when possible, depending on what is accepted nearby.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, soaked, or contaminated bulky items, like swollen mattresses or broken-down furniture, may need standard disposal. Your Loader handles the lifting and loading, and disposal is used only when reuse or recycling is not an option.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Wainaku disposal rules most residents don't know

Bring the wrong load and it can be refused, since Hawaii County transfer stations accept only residential, household-generated self-hauled material. These are the sorting rules Wainaku households follow.

Rule 01

Appliances must arrive clean, empty and drained in Hilo

The Hilo Recycling & Transfer Station takes refrigerators/freezers, washing machines, clothes dryers, water heaters, dishwashers and small air conditioner units Monday through Saturday, but not on Sunday. County rules keep appliances out of refuse containers, and every unit must be clean, empty and drained.

Rule 02

Check greenwaste for invasive pests before hauling it out

Hawaii County asks residents to check greenwaste before moving it so they don't carry invasive species, such as little fire ants, to its Organics facilities. Greenwaste recycling at transfer stations is for residents only. Businesses, farms, government agencies and non-profits are prohibited from dropping it off.

Rule 03

Old tube TVs are not accepted in county drop-off bins

Hawaii County's drop-off recycling program at its Recycling & Transfer Stations does not accept CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs or monitors. If you are clearing out older, heavy tube screens, plan on a separate electronics recycling option.

Rule 04

Leftover latex paint goes to reuse, not hazardous waste

County household hazardous waste collection events do not accept latex paint or water-based acrylic paint. Usable latex paint is collected for reuse at the Hilo, Kea‘au and Waimea Reuse Centers, so half-used cans from a garage cleanout still have somewhere to go.

Rule 05

Only corrugated cardboard goes in the Pāpa‘ikou and Hilo bins

At the Pāpa‘ikou and Hilo Recycling & Transfer Stations, clean corrugated cardboard and brown kraft paper bags go together in one drop-off bin. Boxes should be flattened first. Single-layer boxboard is not accepted, so moving boxes and thin packaging have to be separated.

Rule 06

Tape lithium battery terminals before a hazardous waste event

County household hazardous waste collection events are open to residents only. Lithium-based batteries, rechargeable batteries and batteries of 9 volts or more need tape over their terminals, or each one sealed in its own plastic bag, to prevent accidental fires.

Not unless it is part of a scheduled county program. Hawaii County has no general curbside bulky pickup that I could confirm for Wainaku, and loose items left out can be treated as illegal dumping. Most residents self-haul to a county transfer station or hire a hauler.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Wainaku starts at $95, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, depending on Loader availability for your address and the time you book. Enter your address during booking to see which pickup windows are open. Your Loader sends a heads-up before arriving, so you can plan around the window.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. Leave the items out and add access notes when you book. For items inside a house or garage, someone should be there, or you can leave clear access instructions in advance.

Often yes, if you have a truck and the time. Hawaii County residents can usually drop household waste at transfer stations at little or no cost, though some items are restricted. Hiring out makes sense for heavy or bulky loads, or if you lack a vehicle.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill. Depending on acceptance, they try to donate good items to local charities, recycle materials like metal or cardboard when options allow, and dispose of the rest at the appropriate facility. Outcomes are not guaranteed.

You pick your items and address online, see the price upfront, and choose a pickup window. On pickup day, your Loader arrives, confirms the items, carries them out, and loads them. The total you were quoted is confirmed before you book.

The pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers usually price by truck volume and may confirm the cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before booking. For a few items that is often simpler, while a full cleanout may suit a truckload hauler.
