The Problem

Getting junk off a Puna property is harder than it looks

You search online, call the county, leave messages with a couple of haulers, and wait. One never calls back, another can't come out for weeks. Meanwhile the pile by the carport keeps soaking up rain.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Hawaii County's bulky item programs can help, but they come with eligibility rules, limited scheduling, and restrictions on what's accepted. Unincorporated areas like Kurtistown don't get a city pickup, and you still have to drag everything out to where a truck can reach it.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to drive out and look before they'll quote, and a long trip up Highway 11 can mean a long wait for that visit. Truckload pricing leaves you guessing what counts as a quarter or a half load until the bill arrives.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift shops and donation centers on the island have limited space, so they turn away anything stained, mildewed, broken, or too bulky. In damp Puna conditions, a couch or mattress that sat on a lanai for a season often won't pass inspection.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off dumpster means arranging delivery and pickup windows, finding a level spot on soft or gravel ground, and possibly dealing with permits. You still do all the lifting yourself, and it's far more container than one shed or room cleanout needs.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Kurtistown along Highway 11 and down every side road

Leave a couch under a tarp in Kurtistown and the steady rain turns it into a soggy sponge by the weekend. Nobody wants to wrestle that onto a truck bed alone. Your Loaders like showing up for neighbors here, and they will carry it out from behind the shed, gravel driveway and all.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items pile up fast on big Kurtistown lots, and where they end up matters as much as getting them gone. Your Loader sorts each load by condition, favoring donation or recycling when local options allow.

Local Disposal Rules

The Kurtistown disposal rules most residents don't know

Waste left outside a container counts as illegal dumping in Hawaiʻi County, and these are the rules Kurtistown residents face at Keaʻau and other nearby transfer stations.

Rule 01

Storm-downed branches must be cut down for transfer station bins

Keaʻau's greenwaste bin takes residential branches up to 6 inches across and 5 feet long, three days a week. Loads over 5 cubic yards or hauled by trailer go to the East Hawaiʻi Organics Facility in Hilo. After Kona low storms, the county has temporarily added collection days.

Rule 02

Riding lawnmowers and engines are refused at county scrap bins

Household scrap metal recycles free at county stations, but the bins refuse automobiles, including riding lawnmowers. They also refuse engines, motors, transmissions and other metals with fluids. Propane, oxygen and acetylene tanks and other compressed gas cylinders are excluded too.

Rule 03

Keaʻau opened the island's first transfer station reuse center

Hawaiʻi County opened its first Reuse Center at the Keaʻau Transfer Station in 2003 so usable household items get a second life before reaching the landfill. Pāhoa also has one, which gives Kurtistown residents two nearby places to donate.

Rule 04

Batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and e-waste are banned at transfer stations

County rules list fluorescent light bulbs, lead-acid or lithium batteries, and e-waste as prohibited materials at Recycling & Transfer Stations. The county also says microwaves are not considered e-waste or appliances, so they fall outside both categories.

Rule 05

Home remodel debris is limited to one load per day

Transfer stations accept residential do-it-yourself construction and demolition debris, but only one load per customer per day. Extra loads can come back the next day or go straight to the East Hawaiʻi Regional Sort Station, which also accepts trailers and dump beds.

Rule 06

Refrigerators and washers must be drained before drop-off

Keaʻau's appliance collection accepts only clean, empty, drained household appliances such as refrigerators/freezers, water heaters and clothes dryers. The limit is one item per customer per day, Monday through Saturday, and the facility attendant has to check it in first.

No. Kurtistown is unincorporated and has no regular curbside bulk pickup. Hawaii County handles rubbish through self-haul drop-off, and leaving items on a roadside or vacant lot counts as illegal dumping. Check with the county Solid Waste Division for current rules.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Kurtistown starts at $95 for the first item, which includes labor, transport and disposal. Each additional item is a flat add-on charge, and the exact total is confirmed before booking. Curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off the base price.

Yes, for household self-haul rubbish. The Keaau Recycling and Transfer Station at 16-921 Keaau-Pahoa Road is open daily, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Commercial, farm and government waste is not accepted. It is the cheapest option if you have a truck and the time to haul.

Hard bulky items such as hide-a-beds with metal frames are prohibited at transfer stations. They must go to the East Hawaii Reload Facility, and oversized items may incur a special handling fee. Appliances and scrap metal go in a separate designated area, not the rubbish containers.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance, and try to avoid the landfill whenever options allow. Anything that cannot be donated or recycled is taken to an appropriate disposal facility.

Choose your items online, pick in-home or curbside pickup, and see your price before booking. A Loader arrives in your window and removes the items. For in-home jobs, someone should be present or you can leave access instructions at booking.

LoadUp prices per item online, so your total is set before anyone arrives. Many traditional haulers, such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK, price by truckload and may estimate on site. For a few items, per-item pricing is often simpler, while a full cleanout may suit a truckload quote.
