The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Volcano takes more than a plan

You look up county options, call a couple of haulers, and leave messages that never get returned. One quote needs a site visit nobody schedules. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting under the carport.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Volcano is unincorporated, so there's no city pickup crew. You're left with whatever the county offers, and that usually means hauling things to a transfer station yourself. That works if you have a truck, a free afternoon, and someone strong enough to help you lift.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

A lot of haulers want to see the job in person before they give you a price, and getting someone to drive out this far can take a while. Then the quote is based on how much of the truck it might fill, so you won't know the real cost until loading is done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers only want clean, working items they can resell. A bookshelf that's warped after a few years in a damp shed, a recliner with a broken lever, or a pile of old tools usually gets turned away. You still have to load it all up and drive it there first.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster makes sense for a full renovation, not for clearing out one storage room or a rental between guests. You have to book the delivery and pickup, find a level spot on a sloped or wooded lot, and fill it yourself before the rental period ends.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Volcano, from Volcano Village to Mauna Loa Estates

Hauling an old couch down the mountain to Hilo means a long drive, a loaded truck bed, and a rainforest shower on everything you tied down. Out here, disposal sites are far and options are limited. Your Loader handles the lifting and loading at your place, and showing up for Volcano neighbors is what we like best.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Where a couch, a dead freezer, or a pile of cleanout leftovers ends up matters more when the nearest disposal sites are a long drive away. In Volcano, your Loader sorts items by condition.

Local Disposal Rules

The Volcano disposal rules most residents don't know

Setting junk outside the containers at a county transfer station counts as illegal dumping, so here is what Volcano residents need to know about Hawaii County disposal rules.

Rule 01

DIY renovation debris is capped at one 5-yard load daily

Residents doing their own construction or demolition work may bring one C&D load per day to a county transfer station, up to 5 cubic yards. Debris from commercial or business construction jobs is prohibited at transfer stations entirely.

Rule 02

Fridges and AC units go to a designated refrigerant area

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units and dehumidifiers containing refrigerant must be placed in the designated appliance area, never the refuse container. Household appliance recycling is free at county sites, and Volcano takes appliances Monday, Thursday and Saturday, with each drop-off logged at check-in.

Rule 03

Tires are banned at every county transfer station, even shredded

Hawaii County Code prohibits tires at Recycling and Transfer Stations, including tires that have been cut, sliced, chipped or shredded. Cutting an old tire into pieces to slip it into the refuse chute does not get around the ban.

Rule 04

Anything longer than 7 feet is too big for transfer stations

Hawaii County caps solid waste items at 7 feet or less in any dimension at Recycling and Transfer Stations, including Volcano. Long sectional pieces, bed frames and similar bulky items must fit within that limit to be accepted.

Rule 05

Rainforest yard trimmings need the green waste area, not the chute

Volcano Transfer Station has a dedicated greenwaste collection area open Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and greenwaste cannot go into the rubbish chute. Logs or branches over 1 foot in diameter or 3 feet long are not accepted at transfer station collection sites.

Rule 06

Microwaves fall outside both the e-waste and appliance programs

In Hawaii County, microwave ovens are not considered electronic waste or an appliance for recycling purposes. That means an old microwave does not belong with the refrigerators, stoves and washing machines in the free appliance recycling area.

Yes, for household junk. The Volcano Recycling & Transfer Station at 19-3438 Volcano Road takes residential self-haul rubbish at no charge on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Commercial, farm and hauled business waste are not allowed.

Loads are capped at 3 cubic yards, about a full-size pickup bed, and no single item can exceed 7 feet in any dimension. Vehicles are limited to sedans, SUVs, pickups and vans. Hard bulky items like metal-frame hide-a-beds must go to a regional facility.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Volcano starts at $95, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge, with the exact total confirmed before booking. The transfer station is free if you haul it yourself.

Availability depends on Loader coverage on the Big Island, so same-day is not guaranteed in Volcano. Enter your address during booking to see which dates and times are open. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home, and you can leave access notes.

Appliances and scrap metal can't go in the regular refuse containers. The county recycles them at designated areas at certain stations, and hard bulky items must go to the East Hawaii Reload Facility or West Hawaii landfill. A hauler can take these items away so you skip that drive.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance by local partners. Items that can't be reused or recycled are taken to an appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition and what Big Island options are available.

You book online, see your total price upfront, and pick a time window. Your Loader typically gives notice before arriving, then carries the junk out and loads it, so you don't lift anything. Since Volcano is rural, add clear directions to your booking.

Pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers usually charge by truckload and often confirm price on site, while LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a few items it can cost less, but a full-house cleanout may suit a truckload hauler.
