The Problem

Honolulu has junk options, just not easy ones

You start by searching online, then call the city, then message a few haulers. Some quote vaguely, some never write back. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting on your lanai.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs can work if your timing lines up. You usually have to schedule ahead, follow item rules, and get everything to the curb yourself. If you live in a Makiki walk-up or a high-rise with no curb, that last step is a big one.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many old-school haulers want to see the job in person before they quote it. Then the price is based on how much of the truck you fill, which you only find out once loading starts. You agree to a time without really knowing what you'll pay.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers need items they can actually resell, so stained cushions, a rusted patio set, or anything showing humidity damage may get turned away. Even when usable pieces get accepted, you still have to haul them there and figure out what to do with the rest.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster makes sense for a gut renovation, not for clearing out one spare room in Kaimuki. Space on narrow streets is tight, you might need a permit to park it on the road, and neighbors notice when a bin takes up parking for a week.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Curbside grab or carried out from inside

If a broken patio set is already at the bottom of your driveway, curbside keeps things simple. For a condo unit or a hillside home with a steep, narrow drive, full-service lets your Loaders carry items out from inside, though you may need to confirm elevator or loading zone rules with your building first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Honolulu, from mauka to makai

Hauling an old sofa onto the H-1 at rush hour, then hunting for parking at a transfer station, is a rough way to spend a day off, especially when the elevator is booked and you don't own a truck. Your Loaders handle the lifting and the hauling, and they genuinely enjoy showing up for your neighbors here.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

On an island with limited landfill space, where does a bulky item end up matters more than it might elsewhere. In Honolulu, your Loader sorts each pickup by condition, aiming to keep usable things in circulation when possible.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture, appliances, and household goods in clean, usable shape may be donated when possible and where local options allow. Your Loader sets those items aside during loading so they can head toward a second life.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but not fit for donation may be recycled where available, such as scrap metal or reusable materials. Your Loader separates what can be diverted when local options allow.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, soiled, or contaminated bulky items, like waterlogged mattresses or broken sofas, are hauled by your Loader for responsible disposal through Oahu's waste system, since island landfill space is limited.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Honolulu disposal rules most residents don't know

Putting a couch out without a booked appointment puts you on the wrong side of City enforcement, so here is what Honolulu and the rest of Honolulu County actually require.

Rule 01

Storm-downed branches go to convenience centers, not Ke'ehi

When storms bring down limbs, the City's convenience centers on Oahu accept green waste, but Ke'ehi Transfer Station in urban Honolulu does not. After a major storm in August 2026, the City reopened its drop-off sites and landfill for debris.

Rule 02

Tires are banned from Oahu disposal sites

Old tires cannot be thrown out with household trash because they are banned from disposal sites. State law requires tire dealers to accept and recycle your old tires when you buy new ones, and City convenience centers also take tires.

Rule 03

Curbside furniture pickup happens only by appointment across Oahu

Since July 1, 2020, the City has picked up bulky items across Oahu by appointment only, ending the old monthly schedule. Single family homes can set out up to five bulky items per appointment, and AOAOs or property managers can arrange up to twenty.

Rule 04

Hawaii makes manufacturers responsible for recycling electronics

Under Hawaii's Electronic Device Recycling and Recovery Law, manufacturers must provide recycling programs for covered electronics. The state Department of Health publishes a list of e-waste collection locations on Oahu, and the City also promotes its own eWaste collection events.

Rule 05

Refrigerators and washers need their own appliance appointment

Large metal appliances are not part of a regular bulky item appointment. Single family homes book a separate appointment for up to two metal appliances. If you haul them yourself, Ke'ehi Transfer Station does not accept washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves or water heaters.

Rule 06

Loose lithium batteries have their own drop-off option

Lithium, lithium-ion, NiMH and NiCad batteries sold on their own, plus lead-acid batteries, are accepted at City convenience centers and transfer stations. Taking batteries found during a garage or closet cleanout to these sites keeps them out of the regular trash.

Only if it's booked with the City's bulky item system. Honolulu allows one appointment per address per month, up to five bulky items. Items can go out after 6 p.m. the night before and must be out by 6 a.m. Unlisted extras can be left behind.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Honolulu starts at $95, and curbside pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking.

Same-day slots are sometimes available depending on the Loader schedule and your address. Enter your Honolulu address during booking to see live openings. City bulky pickup is appointment-based, so it usually takes longer to get on the calendar.

The City's appointment covers five bulky items per pickup, plus up to two metal appliances through a separate appliance appointment. For anything beyond that, the City suggests donating usable items, using drop-off facilities, or hiring a private hauler. Crews also won't enter private property to get items.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating to local charities when they accept them. They try to recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Items that can't be donated or recycled go to the appropriate disposal facility.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. Leave the items out with any access notes. For items inside your home or condo, someone should be there, or you can leave access instructions when booking. Condo buildings in Waikiki or Kakaako may have elevator or loading dock rules, so mention them.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers generally price by truck volume and may confirm the quote on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before booking. For large cleanouts, a truckload hauler may suit you better.
