The Problem

Getting junk out of Skagway takes more than a plan

You check what the borough accepts, call around for haulers, and wait on callbacks that may never come. Then the season shifts, the weather turns, and the junk is still sitting right where you left it.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Municipal pickup schedules in small towns tend to be limited, and some items like appliances with refrigerants, electronics, or construction debris may not qualify. Check the city rules section below for local details, and keep in mind that someone still has to haul everything out to the street.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Lots of haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, and then they price by how much of the truck you fill. That leaves you guessing until the job is done. In a remote town, it can also be hard to get an estimate scheduled at all.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Secondhand shops and donation programs have to be careful about condition, so a stained mattress or a broken appliance usually gets turned away. Even when something does qualify, you are still the one loading it, driving it over, and dealing with whatever they won't take.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

For a single room or one turnover between seasons, a dumpster is more than you need. There is delivery and pickup to schedule, you might need a permit, and it takes up space on tight lots and narrow streets. On top of that, you still do all the lifting yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Skagway, from the Taiya Inlet shoreline up the valley

When one highway and a ferry schedule connect you to everywhere else, clearing out an old sofa or a shed full of seasonal leftovers is never a simple errand. Skagway does logistics the hard way. Your Loaders carry it out, load it up, and haul it off, and they like showing up for neighbors here.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Hauling bulky items out of a small, remote town like Skagway raises a fair question: where does it all go? Your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring donation or recycling when local options allow, and disposal for the rest.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Usable furniture and household goods in good, clean condition may be donated when possible and when local options allow. Your Loader sets those items apart during loading instead of mixing them with the rest.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but still have usable materials, like metal frames or scrap lumber, may be recycled where available. Options in a remote town are limited, so recycling is never guaranteed.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, soiled, or contaminated bulky items, such as waterlogged mattresses or broken furniture, are handled as responsible disposal. Skagway's waste options are limited, so confirm details first for appliances with refrigerants or electronics.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Skagway disposal rules most residents don't know

A refrigerator turned away without a refrigerant label, or trash that draws bears, can mean a wasted trip or a court summons under Skagway and Municipality of Skagway Borough rules.

Rule 01

Refrigerators and freezers need a refrigerant recovery label first

The Municipality will not accept a freezer or refrigerator until a licensed person has evacuated the refrigerant with recovery equipment and labeled the appliance to say so. A local hardware store provides this service, so schedule it before drop-off.

Rule 02

Window glass stays out of the glass recycling trailer

Only glass bottles and jars go in the recycle trailer, collected to keep them separate from material burned at the incinerator. Window glass is excluded, and plastic of any kind and tin cans are not recycled at this time.

Rule 03

Dumped debris can be traced back to you

When junk or debris is found on property in violation of Skagway's code, the officer may note any address or identifying information inside the material and post a summons and complaint requiring the responsible person to answer in court.

Rule 04

Only plain corrugated cardboard is recycled in Skagway

Corrugated cardboard is recycled at the Solid Waste Facility only during its two-hour afternoon windows four days a week. Waxed cardboard is refused, and no other forms of paper are recycled, so mail, magazines, and office paper do not qualify.

Rule 05

Outdoor trash must be locked down against bears

Skagway's code treats waste kept outside as prohibited junk unless it sits in a container needing hands or tools to open, a metal dumpster tightly covered or behind bear-proof barriers the Municipality approves, or a can set out after 4 a.m. on collection day.

Rule 06

Junk vehicles must be emptied before Public Works hauls them

Public Works will not pick up an unwanted vehicle until all trash and debris has been removed from it, and vehicles should never be delivered to the Public Works shop. Clearing out the cab and trunk comes first.

Not as a way to get rid of it. Skagway's regular garbage service covers bagged household trash, and bulky items left outside without a pickup arranged can be treated as illegal dumping. Call the Municipality of Skagway Public Works to ask about bulk drop-off options.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Skagway starts at $105 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Availability depends on your address, since Skagway is a small, remote community. Enter your zip code at booking to see live openings. For curbside pickups you usually don't need to be home, and for indoor pickups you can leave access instructions.

Oversized and bulky items usually don't fit regular can service, and Skagway's extra can pickups are priced per 32-gallon can. Hazardous materials such as paint, solvents and batteries generally need special handling and should not go in household garbage.

Loaders try to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them whenever options allow, and recycle what they can depending on acceptance. Skagway is remote, so local donation and recycling options are limited, and whatever can't be reused goes to an appropriate disposal facility.

Pick your items and address online, see your total upfront, and choose a pickup window. On pickup day your Loader calls before arriving, then carries the items out and loads them. Whether you are in Dyea or downtown, access notes help if the driveway or street is tight.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK typically price by truckload and estimate on site. LoadUp prices per item online, so you see your total before booking. Check service availability for your Skagway address, since coverage can vary in remote areas.

For a few bags, self-hauling to the municipal waste facility is often cheaper, and Skagway's posted solid waste rates are set per pound or per volume. For furniture or heavy items, the truck, labor and time can make a flat per-item pickup the easier option.
