The Problem

So many Juneau junk options, so few that work

You search online, call around about pickup rules, and leave messages with a few haulers. One gives a vague quote, another never calls back. Weeks later, the junk is still sitting in the garage, getting rained on.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Juneau doesn't appear to run a free city bulk pickup like some cities do. Household trash service generally comes through a private hauler, and bulky items usually need a separate arrangement with limits on what qualifies. You're still dragging the heavy stuff out yourself.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to see the job in person before quoting, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. They decide that fraction on the spot. Between booking the estimate and booking the pickup, a simple cleanout can drag on for weeks.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Usable furniture and household goods may find a second home when local options allow, but donation spots check condition closely. Stained mattresses, broken pieces, and anything damaged by damp storage often get turned away, and you still have to load and drop off whatever they'll accept.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off sounds simple until it needs a flat, open spot. On narrow, steep streets like those around Starr Hill, placing one can block neighbors or need approval, and you still do all the lifting. For one room of junk, it's far more box than you need.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Juneau, from Douglas Island to the Valley

Juneau has no road out of town, so a busted couch can't go anywhere without a plan, and a rainy Saturday makes a borrowed pickup a bad bet. Your Loaders would rather do the lifting while you stay dry, because showing up for neighbors here is the part of the job they like best.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items are hard to move alone, and in a road-isolated place like Juneau, where they end up matters. Your Loader sorts each load by condition, steering usable pieces toward reuse and keeping as much as possible out of the landfill.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture, appliances, and household goods in clean, good condition may be donated when local options allow. Your Loader will set those pieces aside for that route, though donation is never guaranteed.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Recycling

Items that are damaged but not donatable, such as scrap metal or worn appliances, may be recycled where available. Juneau's outlets are limited, so your Loader sorts what local options can accept.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, soaked, or contaminated bulky items, like moldy mattresses or ruined sofas, go to a local Juneau disposal site. Your Loader handles the lifting and loading. Hazardous materials are typically excluded.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Juneau disposal rules most residents don't know

A bear-raided trash can or an illegally dumped load can bring escalating fines and cleanup costs, so here is how disposal works across the City and Borough of Juneau.

Rule 01

Old tires are not part of the city recycling stream

CBJ's Recycle Center does not accept tires. The city points residents to Les Schwab or the Capitol Disposal landfill instead, both of which take old tires for a charge, so budget for that when clearing out a garage or shed.

Rule 02

Juneau's bear ordinance applies to garbage every month of the year

Garbage must be kept in a garage or a bear-resistant enclosure, with lids that stay secure if a can tips over. Cans go out only after 4 a.m. on pickup day, and bear attraction nuisance fines start at $50 and escalate with repeat offenses.

Rule 03

Computers and TVs go to hazardous waste, not recycling

CBJ lists computers among the items its Recycle Center cannot take and directs them, along with TVs, to the Household Hazardous Waste facility. Cell phones with chargers have a separate reuse route through the AWARE shelter or Cell Phones for Soldiers.

Rule 04

Dumping anything larger than one square foot breaks health code

Leaving garbage or other waste over one square foot on a street, sidewalk, public place, or private property violates CBJ health code, with fines up to $300 per occurrence. When CBJ cleans up private property itself, it can recover costs through a property tax lien.

Rule 05

Glacial flood season makes clearing out household chemicals more urgent

Ahead of Suicide Basin glacial outburst floods, CBJ has urged residents in the flood zone to keep hazardous materials out of reach of floodwater. The Household Hazardous Waste facility takes paint, cleaners, and used oil in original or clearly labeled containers.

Rule 06

Residents can scrap a personal junk vehicle at no cost

CBJ's year-round junk vehicle program lets Juneau residents dispose of a personally owned vehicle free. It must be cleaned out of garbage and loose parts and carry no more than four tires plus one spare, and company-owned vehicles do not qualify.

Generally no. Junk left on a curb, roadside, or public land without a scheduled pickup can be treated as illegal dumping and fined. Check with the City and Borough of Juneau or your waste hauler for current bulk item rules before setting anything out.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Juneau starts at $105 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Availability depends on the day and the schedule in your area. Enter your address at booking to see open times. Next-day and later slots are usually easier to get. For curbside pickups you don't need to be home, but indoor pickups need access.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups, as long as the items are out and easy to reach. For items inside a home, garage, or shed, someone should be there or you can leave access instructions at booking. Your Loader will confirm timing before arriving.

Hazardous items like paint, solvents, pesticides, and batteries generally can't go in household trash anywhere, and large or bulky items often need special handling. Ask the City and Borough of Juneau about its household hazardous waste options. Loaders can't take hazardous materials.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on what local organizations accept. Because Juneau is reachable only by air and sea, options can be more limited than in other cities. Whatever can't be reused or recycled goes to proper disposal.

You pick your items and address online, get a price confirmed upfront, and choose a pickup window. On pickup day, your Loader arrives, confirms the items, removes them, and handles the hauling and loading. You don't need to sweep up or load anything yourself.

Many traditional haulers, such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK, price by truckload and often confirm the final cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms your total before booking. For a few items that's often simpler, while a full-home cleanout may suit truckload pricing.
