The Problem

Jamaica Plain has junk options, just not easy ones

You look up the city's rules, call a few haulers, and wait on callbacks that never come. One wants to see the job first, another quotes vaguely. Weeks go by, and the pile in the basement stays put.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Boston's city bulk pickup programs work well for one item left out on the right day. But some items need special handling, pickups follow municipal pickup schedules, and nobody carries a couch down your third-floor stairs for you.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, then price by how much of the truck you fill. You often don't know what you'll pay until everything is loaded and it's too late to change your mind.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers have to be selective, so stained cushions, worn mattresses, and broken pieces often get turned away. You still have to get things there yourself, and anything they turn down comes right back to your place.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container on a narrow Jackson Square side street can mean a street-use permit, a spot on the curb that neighbors need for parking, and a delivery window to wait for. Then you still have to do all the lifting yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Local Disposal Rules

The Jamaica Plain disposal rules most residents don't know

Set out a mattress without an appointment or toss brick in with the trash, and the city will not collect it. These rules apply in Jamaica Plain, Boston, Suffolk County.

Rule 01

Mattresses and box springs need a scheduled city appointment

Recycling mattresses is a Massachusetts requirement, and Boston will not collect any mattress without an appointment. Only buildings with six units or fewer qualify, so larger buildings need a private mattress recycler. When buying new, ask the retailer to take the old one.

Rule 02

Water heaters and plumbing fixtures are skipped on trash day

Boston's curbside trash service does not collect water heaters, plumbing fixtures, fences, automotive parts, or fire debris, even though ordinary furniture is accepted at the curb. These items must be removed through a private service instead of regular city pickup.

Rule 03

Yard waste bags cannot hold dirt, mulch, or invasive plants

Boston's curbside yard waste pickup takes leaves and yard debris only in large paper bags or open barrels with a City issued Yard Waste sticker. Plastic bags, dirt, mulch, and invasive species are refused, and tied branches max out at three feet.

Rule 04

Recycling barrels used for trash can draw a code violation

Boston requires trash in a black or gray barrel with a secure lid, bought and replaced by the resident. Putting trash in a City-issued recycling barrel can bring a code enforcement violation, and the barrel may be left uncollected or removed.

Rule 05

Brick, concrete, and wallboard are banned from Massachusetts trash

MassDEP waste bans keep asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, treated and untreated wood, clean gypsum wallboard, and ferrous and non-ferrous metals out of landfills and incinerators. Boston does not collect construction debris at the curb, so renovation leftovers require private collection.

Rule 06

Paint and chemicals go to Zero Waste Days, within limits

Boston's Zero Waste Days accept items like oil-based paint, pesticides, motor oil, and lithium batteries from Boston residents only, never businesses. There is a 20 gallon limit on paint, motor oil, gasoline, and chemicals, with no container over five gallons.

Not without checking Boston's rules first. Jamaica Plain is served by Boston Public Works, and regular trash must go out in the right containers on your collection day. Bulk items and anything outside the rules can count as illegal dumping. Call 311 to confirm what applies to your address.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Jamaica Plain starts at $105, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking. Traditional haulers usually charge by truckload.

Same-day pickup is often available when schedules allow, and next-day slots are common. Enter your address during booking to see live availability. For outdoor pickups you don't need to be home. For indoor pickups, someone should be there or you can leave access instructions.

Boston's regular collection has limits on size, volume and material types, and items like paint, chemicals and other hazardous products generally can't go in curbside trash. Check with 311 for the current rules. A hauler can take many oversized loads, though hazardous materials usually need special drop-off.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill. Depending on acceptance, they try to donate furniture and household goods to local charities and recycle metal and other materials whenever possible. Items that can't be reused or recycled go to an appropriate disposal facility.

You book online, pick the items you want removed, choose a time window, and see your total upfront. On pickup day your Loader arrives in the window, removes the items, and cleans up the spot. Narrow Victorian stairways and tight JP streets are handled the same way.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King typically price by truck space and may confirm the cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a full-house cleanout, a truckload hauler may suit you better.
