The Problem

Boston gives you options, just not easy ones

You check the city's pickup page, call two haulers for quotes, wait on a callback that never comes, and ask a donation spot if they'll take it. Weeks later, the junk is still blocking your hallway.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs work well for standard furniture, as long as you request it ahead and haul everything to the curb yourself. Some items, like mattresses and certain electronics, have their own rules. And when you're three flights up or moving out this weekend, the schedule probably won't fit.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to see the job in person before quoting, then price it by how much of the truck you fill. You won't know the real number until the crew is standing in your living room, and by that point it's hard to say no.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers have to be choosy. Stains, tears, missing hardware, or older styles can get an item turned away, and most won't come down a narrow walk-up to collect it. That leaves you with the pieces they passed on and no way to move them.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

On tight Boston streets, a dumpster usually means getting a street occupancy permit, booking delivery and pickup, and taking up parking your neighbors want back. That's a lot of setup for clearing one bedroom or a basement corner.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Pickup Options

Set out at the curb or carried from inside

Curbside works when your items are already out on the sidewalk, in a driveway, or by a back alley. Full-service fits items that are still inside, like a condo in a building that requires an elevator reservation or a cramped basement storage room, and your Loaders will carry them out from where they sit.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Boston, from the Charles to the Neponset

Hauling a sofa yourself means a rental truck, and every Bostonian knows how that story can end: wedged under a Storrow Drive overpass. The Green Line was never going to take the couch either. Your Loaders like showing up for neighbors here, and a weekend free of stuck trucks is the least you deserve.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items rarely belong in one place, which is why where a couch, dresser, or mattress ends up matters in Boston. Your Loader sorts by condition, so reusable pieces, recyclable materials, and true trash can be handled separately when local options allow.

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods in good, clean condition may be set aside by your Loader for donation when local options allow. Donation is never guaranteed and does not come with paperwork or a receipt.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn but not ready for donation, like scrapped metal frames or old appliances, may be recycled where available. Your Loader works within local program rules, and some items have state handling restrictions.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily damaged or soiled big items, such as broken sofas or waterlogged furniture, are taken to an appropriate disposal site. Your Loader handles the hauling so you skip the truck rental and the dump run.

Local Disposal Rules

The Boston disposal rules most residents don't know

Boston fines overfilled trash barrels, and illegal dumping can cost up to $10,000. Here is what Boston and Suffolk County residents need to know before a cleanout.

Rule 01

Fridges get left behind with doors attached or food inside

Massachusetts law prohibits putting items containing Freon in the trash. Boston collects fridges, freezers, water coolers, ice makers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers only by special appointment. Fridge and freezer doors must come off and all food must be removed, or the unit stays.

Rule 02

Yard waste needs paper bags and a City-issued sticker

Boston collects leaf and yard waste at the curb only on scheduled weeks between April and December. Use large paper bags or open barrels with a City-issued Yard Waste sticker. Plastic bags are not allowed, and neither are dirt, mulch, or invasive species.

Rule 03

Curbside trash takes furniture but not construction debris

Boston's curbside service accepts furniture with regular trash, but the City will not collect any construction debris or any materials from businesses. Leftovers from a renovation or contractor job need a separate way to be disposed of.

Rule 04

Old tube TVs and monitors carry lead and a state ban

Massachusetts prohibits throwing away items with cathode ray tubes, which contain lead. Boston lists televisions, laptops, and computer monitors for special collection by appointment. Electronics recycling at its Zero Waste Days also accepts computer monitors and TVs.

Rule 05

Hazardous waste drop-offs are residents-only and can shift with storms

Boston takes household hazardous waste and certain waste ban items at scheduled Zero Waste Days, but only from residents who show a photo ID, utility bill, or lease. Business waste is refused, and events can be postponed or moved when a nor'easter is expected.

Rule 06

Mattresses can't go out with trash and need an appointment

MassDEP has required mattress recycling since November 1, 2022, and Boston only picks up from buildings with six units or fewer. Residents of larger buildings should check with their property manager. Futons and mattress toppers can go out with regular trash.

Not freely. In Boston, regular trash must go out in the right containers on your collection day, and bulky piles left out without a plan can be treated as illegal dumping. Check current rules with Boston 311 or Public Works before putting anything out.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Boston starts at $105, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking. Traditional haulers usually price by truckload instead.

Often, depending on Loader availability in your area and the time you book. Enter your address during booking to see live openings. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home. For in-home pickups, someone should be there or you can leave access notes.

Hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, and chemicals generally can't go out with regular trash. Large or restricted items like appliances or construction debris often have special handling rules too. Check Boston Public Works for current guidelines before setting anything out.

Loaders aim to donate usable items to local charities whenever options allow. They try to recycle what they can, depending on acceptance at nearby facilities. Items that can't be donated or recycled go to the appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes depend on the condition of each item.

You book online, choose your item or items, pick a pickup window, and see the exact price before you confirm. Pickup can be from inside your home or from the curb. A Loader arrives in your window, removes the items, and handles the loading for you.

Often yes. Many buildings in neighborhoods like Back Bay, the South End, and Fenway require elevator reservations or loading dock access for hauling. Ask your building manager about move-out rules and note any access details when booking so the Loader can plan ahead.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King typically price by truckload, often confirmed on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before booking. For large cleanouts, a truckload-based hauler can sometimes be the better fit.
