The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Honokaʻa takes more than it should

You start with good intentions: look up the county rules, call a couple of haulers, wait on callbacks that never come. Weeks go by, and the pile in the carport hasn't moved an inch.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Hawaii County's options can help, but they come with rules on what's accepted, how items get dropped off, and when. Out here, that usually means hauling everything to a transfer station yourself, which is a hard ask without a truck or a second set of hands.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come look before they'll give you a number, and that visit can take days to set up in a rural town. Then the price depends on how much of the truck you fill, so you can't know the real cost until loading starts.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift and reuse spots on this side of the island have limited space, so they turn away anything worn, stained, or broken. Mattresses, old appliances, and furniture that's been through a few rainy seasons often stay with you, and pickup service is rare.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster makes sense for a whole-house gut job, not a few bulky pieces. Rural roads and narrow driveways make delivery tricky, it can sit in your yard for days, and you still end up lifting every heavy item into it yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Pickup Options

Curbside handoff or carried out from where it sits

Curbside works well when your items are already at the end of the driveway or under the carport, which is easy to set up on many rural lots around town. If a couch or old refrigerator is still inside an older home with narrow doorways and tight hallways, choose full-service so your Loaders carry it out for you.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Honokaʻa and the Hāmākua Coast around it

Around here, the rain has opinions about that old sofa on your lanai, and the drive to a drop-off is not one you want to make in a borrowed truck. Your Loader handles the lifting, carrying, and loading, and showing up for a town that looks out for its own is a real pleasure.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items are hard to move without a truck, and Honokaʻa is a long drive from the nearest big facilities. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, so reusable pieces get a chance at a second life before anything is discarded.

Local Disposal Rules

The Honokaʻa disposal rules most residents don't know

Hawai‘i County runs random load checks at its transfer stations, and loads that break the rules can be refused. Here is what applies in Honoka‘a and Hawai‘i County.

Rule 01

Couches and mattresses are accepted up to seven feet

Transfer stations accept soft, compactable bulky items such as mattresses, stuffed chairs and couches along with household refuse. The County limits any single solid waste item to 7 feet or less in any dimension, so oversized sectionals may need to be broken down.

Rule 02

Yard trimmings never go down the rubbish chute

Yard growth adds up fast on the Hāmākua Coast, but County rules ban putting greenwaste into solid waste chutes at transfer stations, and only certain stations collect it. Businesses, farms, government agencies and nonprofits may not drop greenwaste at any County Recycling & Transfer Station.

Rule 03

Scrap metal drop-offs are limited by vehicle type

The Honoka‘a station accepts scrap metal Monday through Saturday only, with a load limit of 3 cubic yards. Only sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks or mini-vans can bring it in. Trailers and dump bed trucks are prohibited.

Rule 04

Big cleanouts get one free rubbish load per day

Honoka‘a residents can drop household rubbish at the transfer station at no charge, but only one load per day. Additional loads of non-construction rubbish must go directly to the East Hawai‘i Regional Sort Station or the West Hawai‘i Sanitary Landfill.

Rule 05

Home renovation debris has a 3 cubic yard limit

Transfer stations accept construction and demolition debris from residential do-it-yourself projects in loads up to 3 cubic yards. Material from commercial or business construction work is not allowed there. The landfill is the only County facility that accepts that debris.

Rule 06

Appliances require an attendant check-in, one per day

Honoka‘a is one of the County transfer stations that collect appliances, also called white goods, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Only one appliance is accepted per resident per day, and you can't leave one without an attendant present.

Not as a free dump. Leaving junk at the roadside without an arranged pickup is illegal dumping. Hawaii County residents can self-haul accepted household items to the Honokaʻa Recycling & Transfer Station at 45-624 Plumeria Street.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Honokaʻa starts at $95, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

It depends on Loader availability for your address. Honokaʻa is a rural Hāmākua Coast town, so same-day slots can be tighter than in Hilo or Kona. Entering your address during booking shows the openings. For curbside pickups, you don't need to be home.

Rules limit what goes in the refuse containers. Large appliances and scrap metal belong in the designated recycling bins, not the trash. Construction debris from DIY projects is restricted too. Check the County Solid Waste Division before you haul a mixed load.

Loaders try to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when possible. They recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Items that can't be donated or recycled go to the appropriate disposal facility.

Pick your items and enter your Honokaʻa address online. You'll see the total price before you confirm, then choose a pickup window. On pickup day, your Loader contacts you before arriving, then removes the items and hauls them away.

Often yes, if you have a truck, can lift the items yourself, and the items are accepted. Hiring help makes more sense when items are heavy or bulky, or when you don't have a vehicle. Hauling from Honokaʻa also costs you the trip and your time.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King usually price by truck volume and may confirm the price on site. LoadUp prices per item online, and you see the total before booking.
