The Problem

Getting junk out of He‘eia takes more than wishing

You search online, call the city, leave messages with a few haulers, and wait. One quotes a range, another never calls back. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting on your lanai.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Honolulu's city bulk pickup programs cost nothing, but you have to set them up ahead of time, follow item limits, and leave everything at the curb yourself. Appliances, e-waste, and renovation debris often fall under different rules, so a mixed garage cleanout rarely fits in one pickup.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. You don't really know the price until the bed is loaded, and by that point saying no feels harder than paying.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift stores and charities need things they can resell, so a couch with mildew, a stained mattress, or a dresser missing drawers usually gets turned away. Some will pick up, but you'll often be hauling the leftovers somewhere else yourself.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off bin makes sense for a full gut job. For one room it's too much: you have to book the delivery and pickup windows, find a flat spot on a sloped lot, and live with a big steel box sitting in front of the neighbors for days.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving He‘eia and the Kāne‘ohe Bay side of Windward O‘ahu

Loading a swollen mattress into a truck bed and crawling down Kamehameha Highway at school pickup time is nobody's idea of a Saturday, and the Pali is no better. Your Loader lifts, carries, and loads from the lanai, carport, or steep driveway, then takes it away. Your Loaders like showing up for neighbors here.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items pile up fast on windward lots, and what happens after pickup matters as much as the haul itself. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring donation or recycling when local options allow.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture, tools, and household goods that are clean and in solid shape may be set aside for donation, where available. Ask the receiving organization directly if you need any documentation.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but not donatable may be recycled when possible. O‘ahu's island-based options for e-waste, appliances, and mattresses are more limited than on the mainland, so reuse is never guaranteed.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, moldy, or contaminated bulky items, like waterlogged sofas or broken-down mattresses, are handled as responsible disposal. Your Loader lifts and loads them, so you never leave anything outdoors near streams or shoreline.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The He‘eia disposal rules most residents don't know

Putting bulky items at the curb outside your scheduled pickup window can bring civil fines. Here is how disposal works in He‘eia and across Honolulu County.

Rule 01

Storm-downed fronds and branches need the right drop-off site

Windward wind and rain storms often leave palm fronds and branches behind. City drop-off locations take green waste, but not all of them do. Ke‘ehi Transfer Station does not accept it, and Kawailoa Transfer Station accepts it only on Thursdays and Sundays.

Rule 02

Refrigerators and water heaters require a separate metal appointment

Large metal appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners, and water heaters are not booked as regular bulky items. They need their own metal item appointment, which allows up to two appliances. Items that are not properly prepared may not be collected.

Rule 03

Loose lithium batteries have a dedicated drop-off path on O‘ahu

The Hawai‘i Department of Health tells residents to take lithium-ion batteries to designated collection sites, authorized pickup services, or household hazardous waste events. City transfer stations accept standalone lithium, lithium-ion, NiMH, NiCad, and lead acid batteries.

Rule 04

Curbside furniture pickup is by appointment, five items at a time

Honolulu ended monthly neighborhood bulky collection in 2020. Each address can book one appointment per month for up to five bulky items, and only the items on the appointment are collected. Anything extra left at the curb may stay there.

Rule 05

Propane tanks and fire extinguishers are not accepted everywhere

Storm preparation often leaves households with spare propane tanks, butane canisters, and old fire extinguishers. Some City transfer stations accept propane and helium tanks, butane, MAPP, and fire extinguishers, but Ke‘ehi Transfer Station does not accept compressed gas of any kind.

Rule 06

Tile, drywall, and demolition debris stay out of bulky pickup

Renovation leftovers are excluded from the City's bulky collection. Construction materials such as tile and drywall, demolition debris, dirt, and rock are listed as not accepted, so a remodel cleanout needs a way to dispose of them other than the curbside appointment.

Only during your scheduled City bulky pickup window. Honolulu allows one appointment per address per month, up to five bulky items, and items can go out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before. Putting them out earlier can bring civil fines.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in He‘eia starts at $95, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, depending on Loader availability for your address. Enter your address when booking to see open times, which run 8 AM to 8 PM daily in the Kāne‘ohe area. For curbside jobs you don't need to be home if you leave access notes.

The City limits you to five bulky items per monthly appointment, plus up to two metal appliances on a separate appliance appointment. Crews won't enter your property, so everything must be at the curb. Bigger cleanouts usually need a private hauler.

Loaders try to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them when local charities will accept them. Recyclable materials go to recyclers when options allow. What can't be donated or recycled is disposed of at an approved Oahu facility.

Book online, choose your items and a time window, and see your total before confirming. Your Loader typically calls or texts before arriving, then removes the items, whether they're inside or at the curb, and handles the hauling.

It can be, if you have a truck and the time. Kapa‘a Transfer Station in Kailua accepts residential refuse and bulky items. You handle the loading, driving, and any fees. A hauler costs more but does the lifting and hauling for you.

The main differences are pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK generally price by truck volume and confirm the cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online, and you see the total before booking.
