The Problem

Getting junk off the headland is harder than it looks

You search for options, call the town, leave messages with a few haulers, and wait on callbacks that never come. Meanwhile the season turns, and the junk is still sitting on the porch.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

West Chop sits inside Tisbury, so it has no pickup program of its own. Island disposal is handled regionally, and many items still need a drop-off trip or a fixed schedule. That's a tough fit when you're only on island a few weekends a year.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Lots of haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, and on an island that visit alone can take days to set up. Then you get a price by the truckload, and you won't know the real cost until the truck is already full.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Secondhand shops want clean items in good shape, and a mildewed armchair from a closed-up cottage usually won't pass. Usable pieces may be donated when local options allow, but someone still has to deal with everything they turn down.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A big container takes up a narrow, wooded drive for days, may need its own arrangements, and your neighbors will notice. And when it's gone you still did all the lifting yourself. Your Loader carries items out from the shed or attic, so you don't have to.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving West Chop, from the harbor entrance to the far end of the headland

Anyone who has tried to book a car spot on the ferry knows a simple cleanout can become a whole expedition. Add narrow lanes and a cottage full of old furniture, and it gets harder. Your Loaders handle the lifting and carrying, and they like showing up for the neighbors who make this place feel like home.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Cottage furniture, old mattresses, and basement leftovers all need somewhere to go once they leave the house. In West Chop, your Loader sorts each item by condition, so reuse comes first when local options allow.

Local Disposal Rules

The West Chop disposal rules most residents don't know

A load hiding a mattress, appliance, or scrap wood can be rejected under state waste bans. These are the rules that apply in West Chop and Dukes County.

Rule 01

Nor'easter cleanup still falls under construction waste bans

When a nor'easter or hurricane wrecks decks, fences, or siding, the cleanup still has to follow Massachusetts law. Metal, wood, brick, concrete, asphalt pavement and clean gypsum wallboard are banned from disposal, so mixed storm debris must go to a facility that sorts these materials out.

Rule 02

Mattresses and old clothing cannot go in the trash

Since November 2022, Massachusetts has banned mattresses and textiles from disposal. Box springs are included. Clothing, linens, curtains and shoes should go to donation or textile recycling, even when they are worn or stained. Mattresses must be sent to recycling.

Rule 03

Tisbury's drop-off takes refuse only with a sticker

In town, Tisbury's transfer station is called the local drop-off, or LDO. You need a purchased sticker to leave refuse there. Recycling is limited to paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles and jars, and a few types of plastic. Many other materials are not accepted.

Rule 04

Refrigerators and air conditioners need refrigerant removed first

Massachusetts bans large appliances from landfills and incinerators, so they have to be recycled as scrap. Under federal rules, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and window air conditioners must have their refrigerant recovered by certified technicians before they can be scrapped.

Rule 05

Brush burning is limited to a short spring window

Massachusetts allows open burning of brush only from January 15 to May 1. You also need a permit from the local fire department for that day. Burning leaves, grass, hay, stumps or building debris is prohibited.

Rule 06

Latex paint is trash only after it dries out

The state environmental agency treats latex paint as nonhazardous. Leftover cans can go in household trash once the paint has fully dried, either in open air or mixed with an absorbent like kitty litter. Oil-based paints, stains and thinners are hazardous and belong at a household hazardous waste collection.

Generally no. On Martha's Vineyard, bulky junk usually isn't collected from the curb. You haul it yourself to a transfer station, and item fees and state disposal rules apply. Items left out without a pickup arranged can count as illegal dumping.

Most Tisbury residents use the town transfer station in Vineyard Haven or the Martha's Vineyard Refuse District facility in Edgartown, (508) 627-4501. Fees and accepted items vary by material, so call ahead for current rules before loading your vehicle.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in West Chop starts at $105 for a single item. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking, and curbside pickup takes $5 off.

Sometimes, but island availability depends on Loader schedules and your address. Enter your West Chop address during booking to see the actual open slots. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home. For in-home pickups, someone should be there or leave access notes.

Massachusetts bans mattresses and textiles from the trash. Electronics, large appliances, propane tanks, batteries, latex paint and fire extinguishers also need special handling. The island refuse district takes household hazardous waste at the Edgartown Transfer Station, which serves all six towns.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance at the receiving location. Whatever can't be reused or recycled goes to an appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition, so nothing is guaranteed.

You choose your items online, get a price, and pick a time window. Your Loader typically calls ahead before arriving, then removes the items and carries them out for you. You approve the total before booking, so the price shouldn't change on pickup day.

The main difference is pricing and booking. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King generally price by truckload, often confirmed on site. LoadUp prices per item online and locks the total before arrival. For a big full-property cleanout, an on-site estimate may still fit better.
