Since October 31, 2020, Valdez collects curbside household garbage only from IGBC certified wildlife-resistant containers. The city does not collect trash in other cans, and unattended garbage in a non-approved container can draw a fine. Designated public dumpsters and the Baler Facility accept household trash free.
All recyclables, including cardboard, newspaper, white paper, glass bottles, and aluminum, must be taken to the Baler Facility. It is open Monday through Saturday but closes the last Friday of each month and on holidays such as Alaska Day.
Washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, and stoves are accepted at the Baler Facility at no charge. Under the city's seasonal scrap metal drop-off program, refrigerators must have doors and coolant removed and water heaters must be completely drained.
Paint, used oil, and antifreeze are accepted for recycling at the Baler Facility, and the city's Environmental Operations Station handles separation and disposal of household hazardous waste. Other hazardous items are collected at periodic household hazardous waste events.
A pickup truck load or less of brush and other organic waste can go to the Brush Area outside the Baler Facility, while larger loads need coordination with the facility first. Curbside brush and yard debris collection is a summer-season service.
