The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Scotts Valley takes longer than it should

You search for options, call about the bulk program, leave messages with a few haulers, and wait. One quotes, one never calls back. Weeks later, the pile is still sitting in the garage.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs help, but they usually need to be booked ahead, cap how much goes out, and turn away certain items. You still have to get everything down a sloped driveway to the pickup spot yourself, on their schedule, not yours.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come look before they give you a number, then price by how much of the truck you fill. That leaves room for the figure to change once the crew is standing in your driveway, and you won't know the real total until the end.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift and donation drop-offs check the condition of what you bring, and stained upholstery, worn mattresses, or broken appliances often get turned away. Even if they take some of it, you still need a vehicle, a free afternoon, and a plan for whatever they refuse.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container sounds simple until you have to find room for it on a narrow hillside street, check whether you need a permit, plan around delivery and pickup windows, and do all the loading yourself. For a garage or one room, it's more than you need.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Scotts Valley, from Mount Hermon Road to Skypark and beyond

Anyone who has white-knuckled Highway 17 on a Friday knows a loaded pickup bed is the last thing you want on that road. Add a steep driveway and a full garage, and the weekend vanishes. Your Loaders genuinely like showing up for neighbors here, because a small mountain-foothill city deserves its Saturdays back.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Where a couch, dresser, or old appliance ends up matters as much as getting it out of the house. In Scotts Valley, your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring reuse or recycling when local options allow.

The Scotts Valley disposal rules most residents don't know

Unsorted or unsecured loads can be turned away or charged a higher rate at county facilities, so here is what actually applies in Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz County.

Rule 01

Small electronics can go in your blue recycling cart

In Scotts Valley, GreenWaste Recovery takes electronic waste in the blue cart if it weighs under 40 pounds and is less than 2 feet in any direction. Larger electronics are picked up at the curb as a bulky item for a fee, scheduled 72 hours ahead.

Rule 02

Old deck boards and fence posts must be declared

Treated wood waste has to be declared at the county scale house. Staff weigh it and record load details to meet state toxic substances rules. Ben Lomond Transfer Station accepts up to 500 pounds a day of treated wood from residents' own homes.

Rule 03

Mattresses recycle free at Ben Lomond, but futons don't

The City of Scotts Valley sends residents to free mattress recycling at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station. The program takes only mattresses and box springs. Futons, crib mattresses, and foam toppers are not accepted and need to go somewhere else.

Rule 04

Keep pool and garden chemicals out of every cart

Paint, cleaning supplies, batteries, and garden and pool chemicals count as household hazardous waste and cannot go in any GreenWaste cart. The county runs drop-off sites at Buena Vista Landfill and at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station, which takes them only on Thursdays.

Rule 05

Storm-downed limbs cost less when kept clean and sorted

Clean, sorted wood and yard waste has its own lower rate at county facilities, but mixed loads pay the higher rate. Wood loads with dirt, trash, or pieces over 8 feet long get a special handling rate, and Ben Lomond does not accept them.

Rule 06

Remodel garbage in Scotts Valley has to go through GreenWaste

State law requires permitted projects to recycle at least 65 percent of construction waste. The city's plan requires GreenWaste for garbage but lets other companies take recyclables. Projects without the required weight receipts can face extra fees or a delayed Final Occupancy Permit.

Not as a standing practice. GreenWaste Recovery handles Scotts Valley's weekly garbage, recycling and organics, but those carts are for regular household waste. Piles left outside carts can be treated as illegal dumping, so confirm bulky pickup options with GreenWaste first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Scotts Valley starts at $75 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, depending on Loader availability for your address and the time you book. Enter your address during booking to see the real openings. Scotts Valley is a short drive from Santa Cruz, so nearby routes can help with quick scheduling.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. You can leave items outside with access notes. For in-home pickups, someone should be there, or you can leave access instructions at booking. Your Loader typically gives notice before arriving.

Bulky items, hazardous materials and construction debris generally don't belong in your weekly garbage cart. Things like paint, batteries and chemicals usually need household hazardous waste handling. Check with GreenWaste Recovery or Santa Cruz County for what each program accepts.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow. Recyclable materials go to recycling facilities whenever possible, depending on acceptance. Only what can't be donated or recycled goes to disposal.

You enter your address and items online and see an upfront price. Then you pick a pickup window and choose in-home or curbside service. On pickup day, Loaders arrive, remove the items and haul them away, so you don't have to lift anything.

The main difference is pricing and booking. Traditional haulers often price by truckload and may confirm the final price on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before booking. For a big cleanout, a truckload hauler may be the better fit.
