Televisions, computer monitors and towers are handled as restricted recycling at the Jackson County landfill rather than buried as ordinary rubbish, because screens and boards carry lead and mercury that state regulators want kept out of the ground.
Hardened latex paint is the only paint Ocean Springs debris crews will take, and hazardous or biomedical waste is refused outright. Liquid paint, oil containers and chemical containers are also turned away at the county landfill, which points residents to amnesty day.
