Residents can take paints, solvents, pool chemicals and household cleaners to the Hyperion Treatment Plant S.A.F.E. Collection Center, which is open Saturdays and Sundays only. Each visit is limited to six pieces, so bigger cleanouts may need doorstep pickup or several trips.
Manhattan Beach and the State of California require all permitted demolition projects to keep at least 65% of site waste out of the landfill. Remodels that add conditioned area, volume or size must do the same. Tonnage records proving it are due before final inspection.
Since July 2020, Manhattan Beach residents can book six bulky item pickups a year, with three items per pickup. These cover appliances, furniture, sports equipment and mattresses. Filling every pickup with three items makes the allowance last longer, and pickups happen on your regular collection day.
The city counts holiday lights and artificial trees with built-in lights as electronic waste. Waste Management picks up e-waste at the curb for free by appointment. A separate truck does these pickups, usually on your regular collection day.
Since January 1, 2022, California has required residents to keep food and yard waste separate from trash. In Manhattan Beach, bigger landscaping jobs can use a bulky pickup, which can include up to one cubic yard equivalent of yard waste.
