Construction materials, demolition debris, dirt, rock, and concrete are excluded, and residents hauling large quantities of construction and demolition waste are directed to PVT Landfill in nearby Nānākuli.
Oʻahu banned e-waste from disposal in 2006, with households exempt. Hawaii law separately requires electronics manufacturers to operate recycling programs for devices like computers, computer printers, and computer monitors, and the state Department of Health publishes collection locations by county.
City convenience centers serve residents only, take up to two loads per day, and limit vehicles to sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans. Trailers and larger rental vehicles need preapproval and are allowed only at transfer stations, not convenience centers.
The city bans tires from its disposal sites, so they cannot be tossed with regular trash. Residents can hand old tires to the dealer when buying new ones or drop them at a city convenience center, which accepts tires separately.
Since July 2020, all of Oʻahu has used appointment-only bulky collection. Single-family homes can schedule up to five bulky items, such as furniture, mattresses, and rolled, fastened carpeting, per appointment, and set-outs are subject to city inspection.
Metal appliances are not lumped in with furniture pickups. Single-family homes book a separate appliance appointment covering up to two metal appliances, while condo associations and property managers can arrange building-wide appointments for up to eight metal appliances.
