The Problem

Fond du Lac has junk options. None of them fit.

You check the city website, call Public Works, request a few hauler quotes, and hear back from maybe one. Weeks slip by, and the junk is still sitting exactly where it was.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

In recent years, the city's free bulk program has run as a spring lottery with limited spots, one bulky item per household, and no apartments. TVs and other electronics don't qualify. If your name isn't drawn, the trip to the drop-off site is on you.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Most traditional haulers want to see the job in person before they quote, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. Someone eyeballs that amount on pickup day, so the number you heard on the phone can change once the tailgate drops.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers take what they can resell, and a stained mattress, worn recliner, or scratched dresser usually doesn't qualify. Most also expect you to load it up and drop it off yourself. Anything they turn down ends up back in your garage.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off makes sense for a full renovation, not one basement corner. You book delivery and pickup windows, may need a permit if it sits on the street, and lose your driveway for days while neighbors watch. You still do all the lifting.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Local Disposal Rules

The Fond du Lac disposal rules most residents don't know

Unscheduled bulky items at the curb can be collected and billed to the property owner, so know these Fond du Lac and Fond du Lac County rules.

Rule 01

Fall leaf pickup skips bags, pumpkins, and piles in the street

Each fall, the city collects leaves raked into rows on the terrace beside the curb. City Code prohibits leaves in streets or on sidewalks, leaves in plastic bags are not collected, and apples or pumpkins belong at the yard waste drop-off.

Rule 02

Freon appliances cost extra at the city bulky waste site

City residents can drop large household items at the Municipal Service Center bulky waste site, but each Freon item adds a separate fee on top of the load charge. The county Clean Sweep does not accept appliances or Freon gases at all.

Rule 03

Hazardous waste has no city pickup, only scheduled events

Fond du Lac does not collect any type of hazardous waste, so gasoline stays out of carts until the city's late summer or early fall event. Fond du Lac County's spring Clean Sweep requires original containers and excludes propane tanks and smoke detectors.

Rule 04

Schedule curbside bulky pickup or the owner gets the bill

Curbside bulky collection is available citywide, but only by appointment with Public Works. Items set out without one can be picked up and invoiced to the property owner, and the city warns that personal property left near the terrace may be treated the same way.

Rule 05

Remodeling debris is barred from the city bulky waste site

The bulky site is meant for large, non-hazardous items removed from inside homes or garages. Construction debris is not accepted there, contractors are not eligible to use it, and acceptance of any item is decided onsite.

Rule 06

Old TVs and electronics fall under Wisconsin's recycling law

After Wisconsin passed its electronics recycling law, the city stopped accepting these items at its bulky waste site. The county Clean Sweep also turns away TVs and electronic components, so electronics need a dedicated recycling outlet rather than the trash.

Only if you schedule it. City residents call 920-322-3540 to book curbside bulky collection, and unscheduled bulk collection can be invoiced to the property. Residents can also drop household bulk items at the Municipal Service Center, 490 Doty Street.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Fond du Lac starts at $90, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

As a general rule, the city charges about $40 per larger item such as an appliance or furniture, with bags and boxed items measured by yardage. At the Doty Street yard, waste that fits in your 95 gallon cart is free, and a pickup, van or SUV load is $20.

Same-day slots are sometimes available, depending on the schedule and your address. Enter your address during booking to see live availability. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home, and for indoor jobs you can leave access instructions at booking.

Probably not at the city site. The Doty Street bulky waste yard is for City of Fond du Lac residents only. It also takes large or heavy, non-hazardous household items, and the attendant decides on acceptance and the final charge. Outside the city, a private hauler or your local landfill is the usual route.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them whenever possible and recycling what they can, depending on acceptance at local facilities. Items that can't be donated or recycled are taken to an appropriate disposal facility.

You pick your items and enter your address online, then choose a time and see your total before confirming. On pickup day, your Loader will give notice before arriving, then load the items and haul them away. Pricing is per item, not by truckload.

Mainly the pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers typically price by truckload and may give an estimate on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms your total before booking. For a large cleanout, a truckload hauler can still make sense.
