The Problem

Seattle has junk options. None quite fit.

You search for a while, check the utility's website, and request a few hauler quotes. Half of them never call back. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting in the garage or blocking the hallway.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Seattle's bulky item collection can be handy if you're a utility customer with a few large pieces. You have to schedule it ahead of time, item limits and fees may apply, and you still need to get everything to the pickup spot yourself, which is hard on stairs or steep lots.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many local haulers want to see the pile in person before quoting, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. That fraction is a judgment call made on the spot. You end up agreeing to a number without knowing what it really covers.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift stores and reuse shops screen what comes in, and they turn away stained upholstery, worn mattresses and anything broken, which is fair. Even when they say yes, you're usually the one loading the car and driving it across town on their drop-off schedule.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

In a city with narrow streets and tight parking, a roll-off container can mean getting a street-use permit, planning around delivery windows, and losing a parking spot your neighbors depend on. Then you still have to haul everything out to it yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Seattle, from Puget Sound to Lake Washington

Hauling an old sofa up a wet hill, then sitting on I-5 or waiting out a drawbridge opening to reach the dump, is a very Seattle way to lose a Saturday. Your Loaders handle the lifting, carrying and loading so you can skip the crawl, and they genuinely like showing up for the neighbors who live here.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Seattle's recycling habits run deep, so it makes sense to wonder where a bulky item ends up. Your Loader sorts by condition, so reusable pieces may be donated, worn ones recycled, and the rest disposed of responsibly.

Donation Pickup

Sofas, dressers, and tables in good, clean shape may go to donation when local options allow. Your Loader carries them out, and acceptance depends on what nearby organizations are taking at the time.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but not ready for donation may be recycled where available. Metal frames, wood, and some electronics can have separate options in Washington, so outcomes vary by item.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged, soiled, or contaminated bulky items, such as a soaked mattress or a broken sectional, are taken for responsible disposal at an appropriate Seattle-area facility, depending on the item and the day.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Seattle disposal rules most residents don't know

A garbage cart packed with recyclables or food scraps can bring a fee on your utility bill, so check these rules before a cleanout in Seattle and King County.

Rule 01

Fridge and pantry cleanouts cannot go in the garbage

Seattle has prohibited food waste from the garbage since 2015, and a fee may be added to your account when food, food-soiled paper, or recyclables make up more than 10 percent of a garbage container. Food belongs only in your City-provided compost cart.

Rule 02

Windstorm branches must be tied with natural fiber twine

Extra yard waste set beside your compost cart is billed per unit. Branch bundles can be up to 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter, weighing no more than 60 pounds, tied with fiber twine. Wire, nylon cording, and plastic banding are not allowed.

Rule 03

Apartment residents cannot book Special Item Pickup on their own

Seattle Public Utilities lets only the bill holder schedule Special Item Pickup for furniture, mattresses, and appliances, so residents of buildings with five or more units must go through the property manager or owner. Items should never go outside before a pickup is confirmed.

Rule 04

Remodel concrete, metal, and clean wood are banned from disposal

Seattle bans asphalt paving, bricks, concrete, metal, cardboard, new construction gypsum scrap, and unpainted, untreated wood from disposal. Painted materials are exempt. Separated materials can go to a recycler, but mixed debris must go to a city-approved Qualified Facility.

Rule 05

Extra garbage bags are billed one by one, 60 pounds max

Each large plastic bag or 32-gallon can set beside your garbage cart counts as a billed unit, and so does a cart too full to close. Where townhome carts are clustered together, label extras with your address so the charge lands on the right account.

Rule 06

Moving boxes recycle free, up to one extra cart's worth

Seattle picks up one extra unit of recycling, about the size of a 96-gallon cart, beside your cart each collection day at no charge. Flatten boxes smaller than 4 by 4 feet and remove plastic wrap and foam. Overflow goes free to the transfer stations.

Only after scheduling a Special Item Pickup with Seattle Public Utilities. Bulky items set out without an appointment count as illegal dumping and can be fined. Once SPU confirms, items are collected on your next regular garbage day, set out by 7 a.m.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Seattle starts at $95, with $5 off for curbside or driveway pickup. The first item includes the base pickup fee and each additional item is a flat add-on, with the exact total confirmed before booking. SPU charges about $30 per large item.

Same-day pickup is often available, but it depends on Loader schedules in your area. Enter your address during booking to see live availability for your neighborhood and date. Next-day and scheduled slots are usually easier to get than same-day.

For curbside or driveway pickups, no. Leave the items outside with access notes. For items inside your home, someone should be present, or you can give access instructions when booking. Many Seattle buildings also need elevator or loading dock details.

SPU large items can weigh up to 300 lbs and run up to 8 feet long, and each one costs about $30. Bigger or heavier loads, or items the city won't take, need a private hauler or a self-haul trip to a transfer station, where garbage has a $35 minimum.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill. Depending on acceptance, furniture and household goods may go to local donation partners, recyclable materials to recyclers, and the rest to the proper disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition.

Pick your items online, choose a date and time window, and see your total before you confirm. On pickup day your Loader typically calls or texts ahead of arrival, then carries the items out and hauls them away. You don't need to move anything to the curb.

The pricing model differs. 1-800-GOT-JUNK prices by truck volume, with a Flex option listed from $39. LoadUp prices per item online, so your total is confirmed before booking. For a few items, per-item pricing is often simpler, while large cleanouts may suit volume pricing.
