Neither the Key Center drop box nor the Purdy Transfer Station accepts hazardous materials. Pierce County takes household hazardous waste free at Hidden Valley on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and says it should never go down drains, onto the ground, or in the trash.
The Key Center price sheet sends mattresses, furniture, and appliances to Purdy or Hidden Valley. At Hidden Valley, four or fewer mattresses or box springs are charged at the garbage rate, while five or more are billed per piece.
Pierce County transfer station rules require motor oil, cooking oil, and coolant to be in a transferable container, with a limit of five gallons per trip. Never mix oil with any other substance, and empty oil containers are charged at garbage rates.
Key Center is limited to residential garbage, yard waste, and recycling, and its price sheet states that no remodeling materials are accepted there. Commercial loads must go to Hidden Valley, Purdy, or the Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center.
Pierce County lists Purdy and Hidden Valley as accepting appliances with refrigerants for a charge, because the refrigerant has to be recovered first. Purdy also takes small appliances, and the county lists private recyclers in Fife for appliances without refrigerants.
