The Problem

Getting junk out of a Roanoke home is harder than it looks

You check the city's website, call about bulk pickup, request a couple of hauler quotes, and wait on callbacks that never come. Weeks later, the junk is still parked in the basement, garage, or spare room.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs work well for some items, but they run on municipal schedules and have rules about what qualifies. You still have to carry everything to the curb yourself, which is a real ask when it's coming down a steep driveway or up from a basement.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come look before they'll give you a number. Then the price is based on how much of the truck you fill, and you often don't know the final total until the job is done. That's a lot of uncertainty for one old couch.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers have good reasons to be selective. Stains, tears, missing parts, or older appliances often get turned away, and most won't pick up. Even if part of your load qualifies, you're still stuck dealing with everything they decline.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster can make sense for a full renovation. For one room of junk, though, you're arranging delivery and pickup, possibly checking on permits, giving up your driveway or street space for days, and still doing all the lifting and loading yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Roanoke, on both sides of the Roanoke River

Roanoke sits in a valley, and anyone who lives here knows the hills come with it: steep driveways, porch steps, and basement stairs between you and that old sectional. Hauling it yourself is a workout nobody signed up for. Your Loaders do the lifting, and they genuinely like showing up for this town.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky furniture, mattresses, and appliances are hard to move without a truck, which is why where things end up matters in Roanoke. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring reuse and recycling when local options allow.

Local Disposal Rules

The Roanoke disposal rules most residents don't know

Break these rules and your pile stays on the curb, or an unacceptable load gets charged at the transfer station. The specifics below apply in Roanoke and Roanoke County.

Rule 01

Three bulky items a week, and bagged trash isn't bulk

Roanoke picks up furniture, mattresses, and other items too big for the 96-gallon Big Blue cart, but no more than three per week. Bagged or boxed trash is not collected as bulk, except during bagged leaf season in November and December.

Rule 02

Brush cut by a tree service is not city pickup

Roanoke's free curbside brush pickup excludes anything cut by a contractor, tree company, or utility company, which matters after storm damage. If you hire a business to cut trees, the city says that business should remove the debris. Stumps are not collected either.

Rule 03

Keep electronics and cords out of the recycling cart

The city lists metal and electronics, plus tanglers like cords and hoses, among Roanoke's top recycling contaminants. Instead, it points residents to stores like Best Buy and Staples, or Goodwill's ReConnect program with Dell, which takes computers and computer related equipment in any condition.

Rule 04

Free transfer station trips are capped at twelve a year

Residents of Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, and Vinton get 12 free transfer station visits per July-to-June year, in vehicles up to a one-ton pickup. Uncovered loads pay a $25 fee before dumping, and proof of residence may be required.

Rule 05

Roanoke County requires halving tires with larger rims

Roanoke County curbside collection takes up to four passenger tires, with rims no larger than 20 inches. Tires with 17 to 20 inch rims must be cut in half by the resident first, and tires never go inside the garbage can.

Rule 06

Remodeling debris is accepted only from do-it-yourself work

The Roanoke Valley Resource Authority accepts remodeling debris free, but only from homeowner DIY projects, not contracted work. City curbside won't take sheet rock or lumber. Shingles are refused, and rock, dirt, brick, concrete, and asphalt cap at 500 pounds.

Not loose. City trucks only empty the blue "Big Blue" cart, and loose or bagged trash outside the can isn't picked up. Cans must sit within five feet of the street. For larger items, check the city's refuse page for bulk options first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Roanoke starts at $85, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking. Traditional haulers usually charge by truck volume, often a couple hundred dollars or more.

Same-day slots are sometimes available, depending on the Loader schedule and your address. Enter your Roanoke zip code at booking to see live availability. For curbside pickups, you generally don't need to be home if you leave access notes. In-home pickups need someone present or access instructions.

The Roanoke Valley Resource Authority runs the Tinker Creek Transfer Station at 1020 Hollins Road NE, which accepts bulk and brush items, and fees apply. Metal can go to Gerdau Metal Recycling at 2580 Broadway Ave SW, and you may get paid for it. Self-hauling is cheaper if you have a truck and the time.

Loaders try to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow. Recyclable materials like metal are routed to recyclers whenever possible. Whatever can't be donated or recycled, depending on acceptance, goes to the appropriate disposal facility.

You pick the items and a time window online and see your price upfront. Your Loader typically sends a heads-up before arriving, then carries the items out and loads the truck. You don't need to move anything yourself, and the price you were quoted is the price you pay.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK generally price by truck volume, which can mean an estimate on arrival. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a full-house cleanout, a truckload service can still make sense.

A dumpster fits big renovation or multi-room projects where you can load things yourself over several days. Junk removal fits when you want the heavy lifting handled in one visit. For a few bulky items, per-item pricing is often simpler than renting a container and finding a place to park it.
