King George County rules say during and immediately after inclement weather, vehicles are admitted at the Purkins Corner Convenience Center at the discretion of the County Administrator or the Director of Solid Waste & Recycling. After a tropical storm, plan for delays.
Virginia law bars dumping trash on a highway, its right-of-way, or private property without the owner's written consent, a Class 1 misdemeanor. County code treats any waste pile that creates a nuisance or threatens groundwater as an open dump.
The two county convenience centers are open only to King George County residents and property owners. Non-residents and commercial users can still dispose of waste at the Sealston landfill, where the fee is determined by the weight of the material.
From February 15 through April 30, Virginia prohibits open burning before 4 p.m. if the fire is within 300 feet of woodland, brushland, or fields containing dry grass. In wooded King George County, hauling limbs away is often the practical alternative.
At the Purkins Corner Convenience Center, containers and their contents are subject to inspection by the attendant at any time, and users are responsible for cleaning up any spillage that happens while delivering or unloading their waste.
