The Problem

Clearing out a Palmdale house is harder than it looks

You search for answers, call the township office, leave messages with a few haulers, and wait. One sends a vague quote, another never calls back. Weeks go by, and the junk still fills the garage.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Municipal pickup schedules can help, but bulk items often have to be set out on certain days, may need to be scheduled ahead, and usually come with limits on what qualifies. Appliances, renovation debris, and anything stuck in a basement rarely fit the rules.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, then price by how much of the truck you fill. You end up blocking off time for an estimate and still can't be sure what the final bill will be.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers need items they can resell, so stains, wear, missing parts, or outdated styles can get a piece turned away. Broken furniture, old bedding, and general clutter don't fit there, and you're still the one hauling it in.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container takes up your driveway for days, may need a permit or HOA approval if it touches the street, and depends on drop-off and pickup times. You still do all the lifting yourself, which is a lot for one room.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Set it by the driveway or leave it where it sits

Most homes here are single-family houses with their own driveways, so curbside works well if you can roll a grill or bagged brush to the end of the drive yourself. What Happens to Your Junk

Local Disposal Rules

The Palmdale disposal rules most residents don't know

Dropping unpermitted items at the township brush pile can bring a citation, and some materials are excluded from curbside service entirely. Here is what applies in Palmdale, Dauphin County.

Rule 01

Televisions and computers are banned from Pennsylvania household trash

Under Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act, televisions, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, tablets and e-readers cannot go out with regular trash. Manufacturers fund recycling programs for these devices, and South Hanover Township lists electronics recycling among its separately managed services.

Rule 02

Storm-downed limbs can go to the township brush pile

When ice or wind downs branches, South Hanover's brush pile takes limbs, tree debris and shrubbery clippings daily, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no permit fee. Limbs must be under six feet long and six inches across; grass clippings and sod are prohibited.

Rule 03

Only one bulk item goes out per collection day

Curbside service in South Hanover Township, which includes Palmdale, takes trash, recycling and one bulk item per collection day, set out by 6 a.m. Bags or containers cannot exceed 36 gallons or 50 pounds, so a large cleanout can stretch over weeks.

Rule 04

Freon appliances need a scheduled pickup instead of a curb drop

Air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and other appliances containing freon are not part of routine curbside collection in the township. Residents must call Penn Waste ahead of time to schedule a separate pickup rather than setting these units out with the regular trash.

Rule 05

Propane cylinders and rechargeable batteries stay out of the cart

The township's 2026 collection calendar warns that rechargeable batteries and pressurized tanks, including propane cylinders, oxygen tanks and nitrous oxide canisters, should never go in regular trash or recycling. Dauphin County also no longer offers residents a hazardous waste disposal service.

Rule 06

Renovation debris is excluded from curbside collection

Penn Waste's collection calendar for South Hanover Township states plainly that no construction debris will be collected at the curb. Leftover materials from a Palmdale remodel or repair project therefore need a separate disposal route, planned before the work begins.

Only within Derry Township's rules. Standard Service residents may set out one bulk item per week on their regular pickup day. Fabric items like sofas or box springs must be covered in plastic. Extra piles beyond that aren't covered by the township program.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Palmdale starts at $80, and curbside or driveway pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge, with the exact total confirmed before booking.

Same-day slots are sometimes available, depending on Loader schedules in the Hershey area. Next-day is more common. Enter your address during booking to see live availability. For curbside pickups, you usually don't need to be home if access notes are provided.

Appliances with Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, require you to call Waste Management at 1-800-869-5566 before setting them out. Materials not accepted curbside can go to the township Recycling Center at 650 Clearwater Road.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow. Recyclable materials go to recyclers whenever possible, depending on acceptance. Whatever can't be donated or recycled goes to an appropriate disposal facility.

You pick your items and a time window online, and the price is shown upfront before you confirm. On pickup day your Loader typically calls or texts ahead of arrival, then removes the items from inside your home, garage, or curb.

Pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers often price by truck volume and may confirm the final price on site. LoadUp prices per item online, locked in before anyone arrives. For a large cleanout, a truckload hauler may be a better fit.

For one item a week, yes, the township's Standard Service is the cheaper choice. It doesn't suit a garage or estate cleanout with many items, or residents on the Pay As You Throw plan. A hauler can help with those jobs.
