The Problem

Getting junk out of McCandless shouldn't take this long

You check the town website, call about bulk pickup, request a few hauler quotes, and wait. One never calls back, another wants to come look first. Weeks later, the junk is still sitting in your garage.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Municipal pickup schedules can help with the occasional bulky item, but they often come with limits on what goes out, how much, and when. Items usually have to be requested ahead and dragged to the curb by you, which doesn't help with a basement full of stuff.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to send someone out for an in-person estimate before they'll commit to anything. Then the quote is based on a fraction of a truckload, which is hard to picture, and the final number can shift once the crew sees the job.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation drop-offs want items in clean, working shape, and they turn down a lot: stained upholstery, worn cribs, older electronics. You still have to load and drive everything there yourself, then figure out what to do with whatever gets turned away.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container makes sense for a full gut renovation, not for clearing out a spare bedroom. You may need to sort out placement rules, book delivery and pickup windows, and live with a big steel box in the driveway while neighbors wonder how long it's staying.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving McCandless and all across the North Hills

Anyone who has tried to cross McKnight Road on a Saturday knows a loaded pickup bed and a left turn do not mix, and that's before the dump-run line. Skip the whole expedition. Your Loader would rather carry it up from the basement and clear it out, because McCandless neighbors deserve a Saturday that's actually theirs.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Getting rid of bulky items is only half the job, because where they end up matters just as much. In McCandless, your Loader sorts each item by condition, so donation, recycling, or disposal happens when local options allow.

Local Disposal Rules

The McCandless disposal rules most residents don't know

Mixing recyclables into trash can leave a load uncollected and extra items carry added charges, so these are the rules that apply in the Town of McCandless and Allegheny County.

Rule 01

Burning a junk pile is off the table in Allegheny County

Outside of narrow permits, the Allegheny County Health Department allows only clean wood, propane, or natural gas to be burned outdoors, even in a fire pit, and bans wood burning on Air Quality Action days. Leaves, old furniture, and household junk need another route.

Rule 02

One bulk item per week goes to the curb free

Since January 2025, McCandless households can set one oversized item that won't fit in the cart, such as white goods, appliances, or specialty items, at the curb on their regular collection day at no charge. Additional items must be scheduled and prepaid through Waste Management.

Rule 03

Hot fireplace ashes can leave you paying for the cart

McCandless trash carts come through the Town's contract with Waste Management, and residents generally are not billed for a damaged cart. The exception is damage caused by hot ashes placed inside, so let fireplace and wood stove ashes cool fully before tossing them.

Rule 04

Household chemicals and old TVs get a doorstep collection

Through the Town's contract with Waste Management, residents can schedule At Your Door collection for household hazardous waste such as cleaners, chemicals and automotive products, plus e-waste like old computers and televisions. Instructions arrive ahead of pickup so materials can be packed properly.

Rule 05

Leaf vacuum trucks leave branches and grass clippings behind

The Town's fall leaf program runs October 1 through November 25, 2026, weather permitting, and its vacuum trucks take leaves only. Tree limbs and grass clippings go in the green-top yard-waste cart, whose seasonal Waste Management collection ends December 4, 2026.

Rule 06

Overflow trash bags need a phone call, not a click

Bags that don't fit in your cart can be collected for $6 each, but McCandless treats this as a special service not typically offered under municipal contracts. Unlike extra bulk items, overflow bags must be scheduled through the Waste Management call center rather than online.

Only one bulk item per week, and it must be scheduled first. Since January 2025, McCandless residents get one free bulk item at the curb on their collection day through Waste Management. Drivers need advance notice through the WM service hub.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in McCandless starts at $80, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking. Extra trash bags with WM cost $6 each, prepaid.

Same-day slots are sometimes open, but it depends on the day's schedule. Enter your address when booking to see live availability for McCandless. For curbside pickups you don't need to be home. For indoor jobs, someone should be there or you can leave access notes.

WM's McCandless guidelines list construction waste, auto parts, tires, household hazardous waste like paint, oil and cleaners, and medical or electronic waste as not acceptable in regular trash service. Those items usually need a separate disposal route, so check before setting anything out.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow. They also try to recycle materials such as metal and cardboard depending on acceptance. Items that can't be donated or recycled go to an appropriate disposal facility.

You book online, choose your items and a time window, and see the total before you confirm. On pickup day your Loader gives you a heads-up before arriving, then removes and loads the items. Curbside items can be left out with access notes if you won't be home.

The town's free weekly bulk item is the better deal if you have a single item and can wait for your collection day. A hauler makes more sense for several items, items inside your home or garage, or a cleanout that can't wait for weekly WM collection.

The main differences are pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers often price by truckload and may confirm the final cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online and locks the total before anyone arrives, which can suit small jobs of one to a few items.
