Junk has a way of piling up until it's one more thing on the list. Book LoadUp, see your price upfront, and get a pickup that frees up your island space.
You call around, leave messages with mainland haulers who may not cross the bridge, and wait to hear back. Some never reply. Weeks go by, and the junk is still in the barn.
Many small Maine towns, Stonington included, rely on a transfer station rather than a pickup program. That means you do the loading, find a truck big enough, and work around changing seasonal hours and item rules before anything leaves your property.
Getting a traditional hauler to a remote island often means waiting for someone to come out and look first. Then the quote is based on how much of the truck you fill, so you don't really know the final cost until the job is done.
Donation centers want furniture and goods in good, resellable condition, and they have every right to be choosy. Worn, stained, or broken pieces get turned away, and getting the ones they do accept there is still up to you.
A roll-off container sized for a full renovation is a lot for one cluttered spare room. Delivery out to Deer Isle takes planning, narrow village roads and tight driveways leave little room, and the bin sits in plain view for days.

Out here, a bulky load is never a quick errand. Route 15 is the main road down the island, and a borrowed truck can swallow your whole day. Your Loader handles the lifting, carrying, and loading instead, and honestly, your Loaders like showing up for neighbors in a town that looks after its own.
Bulky items on an island don't have many easy exits, so what happens after pickup matters in Stonington. Your Loader sorts by condition, and when local options allow, usable pieces are donated or recycled before disposal.
Clean furniture and household goods in good shape may be donated when possible and local options allow. Choices on a small island can be limited, and if you want a receipt, deliver items to the charity yourself.
Items that are worn or damaged but not fit for donation may be recycled where available, such as scrap metal or reusable materials. Island and regional recycling options can be limited, so nothing is guaranteed.
Heavily damaged or soiled bulky items, like a collapsed sofa or a waterlogged mattress, are disposed of responsibly through an appropriate facility. Your Loader handles the lifting and loading, and disposal options depend on what local sites accept.
Skipping the annual dump sticker or leaving fees unpaid can cost you Transfer Station privileges, so these are the rules that apply in Stonington, Hancock County.
Stonington charges rates for incoming loads of brush and wood debris because more of it is arriving and ash removal costs money. The burn pile is not always open, so the town strongly recommends confirming it is open before hauling limbs.
Stonington's Transfer Station has a take-it-or-leave-it section and accepts items for the Swap Shop, so usable belongings get a second life instead of going into a compactor. Like household trash and recyclables, Swap Shop items can be dropped off without checking in first.
The Transfer Station is currently taking newspaper, cardboard, glass, and metal food cans in its recycling building. Plastics are not on that list, so pulling cardboard and glass out of mixed cleanout loads keeps them out of the compactors.
Renovation and demolition debris goes to its own demolition pile, and contractors working on a site in Stonington must get their own Transfer Station sticker for $5.00. Separating demolition material from household trash before you arrive keeps it out of the compactors.
The Stonington Transfer Station collects returnables and uses the money to help pay for operations. Setting deposit containers aside during a cleanout turns a pile of empties into support for local waste service.
The Stonington Transfer Station has an electronic waste section separate from its two solid waste compactors. The town asks people to check in with the attendant before dumping anything other than household trash, recyclables, or Swap Shop items, and that includes electronics.

Hazardous items and bulky appliances have special rules. Refrigerators and freezers cost $40 each at the Stonington station, and tires cost $5 or $25 depending on size. Paint, solvents and chemicals are not ordinary trash, so check disposal options before loading them up.
Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them when local charities accept them. They try to recycle metal, cardboard and electronics whenever possible. Anything that can't be donated or recycled goes to an appropriate disposal facility.
You pick your items online, see the full price upfront, and choose a pickup window. A Loader typically calls before arriving, then removes the items from inside your property or from the curb. For curbside pickups, you don't need to be home.
Not for curbside or driveway pickups, since items can be left out with access notes. For pickups inside a home, garage or seasonal cottage, someone should be there, or you can leave access instructions when booking.
The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers usually price by truckload and often confirm the cost on arrival. LoadUp prices per item online and locks in the total before booking. For a full-house cleanout, a truckload hauler may suit you better.
