The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Chicago takes more than it should

You call 311, search for donation pickups, and request a few hauler quotes. One wants to come look first, another never calls back. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting in the basement or by the back porch.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs can work if your home is on the city's residential garbage service, but bigger apartment buildings usually rely on private haulers. You also need to put in a request and wait for it to be scheduled. Some items aren't accepted, and you still have to get everything to the alley.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers won't give you a price until someone comes out to look, and then the quote depends on how much of the truck you fill, which is hard to judge from your doorstep. You only find out what it really costs after the crew has started loading.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Resale shops and charities depend on things they can sell, so stained upholstery, scratched particleboard, and worn mattresses often get turned away. Even items they'd take usually have to be dropped off by you. Donation may be possible when local options allow, but the rest still needs somewhere to go.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster takes up your parking or alley space for days. Placing one on the public way may require a permit, and the delivery and pickup dates have to work with your schedule. Neighbors may start using it too. For one cleared-out room, you're paying for far more container than you need.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Local Disposal Rules

The Chicago disposal rules most residents don't know

A refrigerator left out with its door still on, or a basement cleanout set out without notice, can lead to a ticket. These rules apply in Chicago and Cook County.

Rule 01

The city chemical drop-off turns away latex paint

Chicago's Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility takes household chemicals and old computers from residents only, not businesses. It does not accept latex, acrylic or water-based paint, alkaline batteries, smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, or household appliances like microwaves and washers.

Rule 02

Take the doors off old refrigerators and freezers

Chicago's sanitation rules say residents must remove the doors or lids from any refrigerator or freezer they throw out before setting it out. The rule keeps children from getting trapped inside, and leaving out a fridge with its door on breaks city code.

Rule 03

Holiday trees get chipped into mulch each January

After the holidays, Chicago runs a Christmas tree recycling program with drop-off sites at parks around the city, where trees are chipped into mulch. Before dropping off a tree, remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel and stands. Artificial trees are not accepted.

Rule 04

Buildings with five or more units need private collection

City garbage service, including bulk pickup, covers only single-family homes and apartment buildings with four units or fewer. Larger buildings must hire private garbage collection, and their owners must provide enough containers for all tenants. Check with building management before a move-out.

Rule 05

Illinois keeps televisions and computers out of landfills

Since 2012, Illinois's Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act has barred residents from throwing covered electronics in the trash. These include televisions, computer monitors, printers and computers. They have to go to an electronics collection program or recycling event.

Rule 06

Call ahead before setting out a basement or attic cleanout

Streets and Sanitation asks residents to set up a bulk pickup with their ward superintendent before putting out any large item or extra load of trash, such as junk from a basement or attic cleanout. Items put out without notice can lead to a ticket.

Generally no. Extra items set out beside your cart without a city arrangement can be treated as illegal dumping, which Chicago can fine. Call 311 to ask the Department of Streets and Sanitation what it will collect at your address and when.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Chicago starts at $80, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking. Traditional haulers usually price by truckload.

Often, depending on the day's schedule and your address. Enter your Chicago address at booking to see live availability for same-day or next-day slots. For curbside pickups you usually don't need to be home, and for in-home pickups someone should be there or leave access instructions.

Hazardous items like paint, solvents, and batteries don't belong in your cart or a junk load. Chicago runs a Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility for these, so check with 311 on current hours and accepted items. Large or bulky loads often need separate arrangements.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow. Recyclable materials go to recycling facilities depending on acceptance. Whatever can't be donated or recycled is taken to an appropriate disposal facility.

You choose your items online, see the total upfront, and pick a time window. On pickup day your Loader typically gives notice before arriving, then removes the items from inside or outside your home and loads them up. Payment is handled after the job.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King typically price by truckload, often with an on-site estimate. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For large cleanouts, a truckload hauler can be a better fit.

Placing a dumpster on a public street or alley in Chicago generally requires a city permit, while a junk removal truck loading briefly does not. Rules vary by location, so confirm with 311 or the Chicago Department of Transportation before placing a dumpster.
