The Problem

Getting rid of junk on Kauai takes more than it should

You search online, call the county, leave messages for a few haulers, and wait. One calls back with a vague quote, another never does. Weeks later, the junk is still sitting right where you left it.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

County programs for bulky items exist, but they come with rules about what qualifies, how to request service, and when it happens. Some items need special handling, and the timing rarely lines up with a move-out date or a rental turnover.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

With only a few haulers working the island, you often wait for someone to come look before you get a number. Then you hear about truckload fractions and surcharges, and the final bill can still shift once the job is done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Reuse spots on Kauai have limited floor space, so they turn away pieces with stains, rust, or humidity damage. Even when they accept something, you still have to get it there, and anything they decline comes right back home with you.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off bin means arranging delivery, finding room on a narrow driveway or street, and possibly sorting out a permit. Then you still carry everything out yourself, while neighbors look at a big container for days over a single room of stuff.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Lihue, all around Nawiliwili Bay

An old sofa can't exactly catch a ferry off Kauai, and borrowing a truck means crawling along Kuhio Highway with everyone else. Add salty air that ages furniture fast, and the pile only grows. Your Loader handles the lifting, carrying, and hauling, and truly enjoys showing up for the neighbors who keep Lihue going.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Where a couch, mattress, or old appliance ends up matters on an island with limited space and few recycling outlets. In Lihue, your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring reuse and recycling when local options allow.

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household items that are clean and still usable may be donated when local options allow. Your Loader sets those pieces aside as they carry everything out, though acceptance can change from place to place.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but not fit for donation may be recycled where available, such as metal frames or appliance parts. Your Loader separates what can be diverted, since island recycling options vary.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Local Disposal Rules

The Lihue disposal rules most residents don't know

Bring the wrong item to the wrong gate and your load can be refused. These are the rules that apply to cleanouts in Lihue and throughout Kauai County.

Rule 01

Every tire on Kauai is banned from the landfill

All tires are sent to recycling instead of being buried. Residents can bring up to eight auto and light truck tires, or four truck and high-performance tires, per year to any transfer station or the landfill for free, and rims can stay on.

Rule 02

Cut renovation debris down below three feet before hauling

County rules prohibit construction and demolition debris larger than three feet in any dimension at refuse transfer stations. The Lihue station started taking construction and demolition waste again in May 2025, after restrictions that began in September 2024.

Rule 03

Lihue appliances go to Puhi Metals, not the transfer station

Unlike other county stations, the Lihue Refuse Transfer Station does not accept appliances or scrap metal. Lihue-area residents take refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves, stoves, water heaters, and air conditioners to the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility, where residential drop-off is free.

Rule 04

Rented trucks and box vans face transfer station limits

Vehicles over three-quarter ton capacity, box trucks, and box vans are not allowed at Kauai refuse transfer stations. Any commercial vehicle or rented truck must pay with tipping fee coupons, which are sold through the Kauai County Division of Motor Vehicles.

Rule 05

Small propane tanks are the only pressurized containers accepted

Pressurized containers are on the county's list of materials banned at transfer stations. The one exception is propane cylinders of ten gallons or less from residents hauling their own loads. These are collected for recycling instead of going in with the trash.

Rule 06

Mattresses and big furniture have only two drop points

Kauai County does not offer bulky item collection. Mattresses and furniture larger than three feet are accepted only at the Lihue Refuse Transfer Station or Kekaha Landfill, so the Lihue station is the closer choice for most residents who don't live on the west side.

Not unless it's part of a county-arranged collection. Items left out on a street or roadside without one can count as illegal dumping in Hawaii. Kauai County's Solid Waste Division sets the rules for bulky items, so confirm current options with them before putting anything out.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Lihue starts at $95 for a single item, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. Your exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, depending on Loader availability for your address. Enter your zip code during booking to see the open time slots, which can include same-day or next-day. For curbside pickups you don't need to be home. For in-home pickups, someone should be there or leave access instructions.

Hazardous items like paint, chemicals, batteries and propane tanks generally can't go in household trash or a bulk load. Large items may also need special handling at county facilities. Check with Kauai County Solid Waste for current rules, since accepted materials and fees can change.

Loaders try to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities or reuse outlets whenever options allow. Recyclable materials go to recycling when facilities accept them. Donation and recycling aren't guaranteed, and the rest is taken to an approved disposal site.

You choose your items online, get an upfront price, and pick an arrival window. A Loader contacts you before arriving, then carries the items out and loads them, so you don't have to lift anything. Because the price is confirmed at booking, there's no surprise estimate at your door.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers usually price by truckload and may confirm the total on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a large cleanout with many items, a truckload hauler may be a better fit.
