The Problem

On Lāna‘i, the usual junk fixes fall short

You search online, call the county, and leave messages with the few haulers who might serve the island. Then you wait on callbacks that never come. Weeks slip by, and the junk is still sitting on the lanai.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

County solid waste services on the island don't work like a mainland bulk program. Any free option for large items usually comes with item restrictions, advance requests, and limited dates. It also still leaves you dragging heavy pieces out of the house on your own.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

With so few haulers based nearby, you may wait days for someone to come look before you even get a number. Then truckload pricing turns into guesswork, and the final bill can change once the crew sees what's actually there.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation outlets on a small island have limited space, so they tend to accept only clean, working items in good shape. Worn mattresses, broken furniture, and tired appliances get turned away, and you still have to load and deliver whatever does qualify.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container means booking delivery and pickup, possibly getting a permit, and giving up yard or driveway space on a tight plantation-era lot for days. For one room or a few bulky pieces, you pay for space you won't fill, and you still do all the lifting.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Lāna‘i City, from Dole Park out to Kō‘ele

Not everyone keeps a pickup handy, and an old sofa from a plantation-era cottage won't fit in a hatchback. Your Loaders lift it, carry it out, and haul it away so you can skip the borrowing and favor-calling. Lāna‘i City looks out for its own, and your Loaders are glad to be part of that.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Where a couch, dresser, or old appliance ends up matters on a small island like Lāna‘i, where disposal options are limited. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring donation or reuse when possible.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods in good, clean condition may be donated when possible and where local options allow. Your Loader lifts and carries these items out separately so they can be set aside for that path.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are damaged but have usable materials, like metal frames or some appliances, may be recycled where available. Outlets on Lāna‘i are limited, so some materials may need to travel off-island.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Local Disposal Rules

The Lāna‘i City disposal rules most residents don't know

Banned items left beside a County cart are not picked up, and prohibited loads are refused at the landfill, so here is how Maui County rules apply in Lāna‘i.

Rule 01

Liquid paint and bulk liquids are barred from trash and landfill

Hazardous liquids and paint cannot go in Maui County trash for pickup. Acids, oils, gasoline, non-solidified paint and other liquids are also prohibited at all County landfills. Paint must be fully solidified before the landfill will accept it.

Rule 02

Mattresses and furniture are banned from Lāna‘i curbside pickup

County residential collection bans mattresses, box springs, furniture, water tanks, sinks and other heavy or bulky items. Each Lāna‘i home gets one County-issued 96-gallon cart that is emptied once a week. Extra bags or loose items left beside it will not be picked up.

Rule 03

Refrigerators and air conditioners wait for a scheduled collection event

Appliances and air conditioners are banned from County landfills. On Lāna‘i, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters and A/C units are accepted only at County collection events held a few times a year. These events are first come, first served because off-island hauling capacity is limited.

Rule 04

Yard trimmings must be cut to three feet or less

Maui County residential pickup bans lumber and yard trimmings longer than three feet, and large tree limbs do not belong in the automated cart. On Lāna‘i the cart is emptied once a week, the lid must close, and overloaded carts are not emptied.

Rule 05

Construction debris requires a non-hazardous waste declaration form

Maui County landfills, including Lāna‘i's, accept construction and demolition debris only with a completed Declaration of Non-Hazardous Construction and Demolition Waste form, and only on weekdays until 1 p.m. Debris contaminated with asbestos, waste paints, solvents or adhesives does not qualify.

Rule 06

State law makes electronics manufacturers pay for recycling

Hawai‘i's Electronic Device Recycling and Recovery Law requires manufacturers to fully fund the collection and recycling of electronic devices sold in the state. County residential pickup bans computers and televisions. Lāna‘i's collection events accept TVs, computers, printers, copiers and monitors.

Not as a free-for-all. Items left outside without a scheduled pickup or approved drop-off can count as illegal dumping under Hawaii law. Maui County's Solid Waste Division runs the island's disposal, so confirm current rules and hours with them before leaving anything out.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Lāna‘i City starts at $95 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

It depends on Loader availability for your address, which can be tighter on a small island. Enter your address during booking to see live openings for Lāna‘i City, Dole Park, Kō‘ele, or Mānele, and book earlier in the day if you need a fast slot.

For curbside or driveway pickups, no. Leave items out with access notes. For items inside a home or cottage, someone should be present, or you can leave entry instructions at booking. Your Loader will let you know when they are close to arriving.

Large, bulky, or restricted items like old furniture, appliances, paint, or batteries can be tricky, since everything on the island is limited by Maui County's local disposal facilities. Hazardous materials generally need special handling, so ask before booking.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them, and they try to recycle materials whenever possible. Outcomes depend on what local charities and recyclers will accept, and anything that can't be reused or recycled is disposed of at an appropriate facility.

Pick your items online, enter your Lāna‘i City address, choose an available time window, and review the confirmed price before you book. On pickup day, your Loader arrives, removes the items from the agreed spot, and hauls them away.

The main differences are pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King often price by truckload and estimate on site. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking, which suits small jobs well. Large cleanouts may suit truckload pricing.
