Key West collects up to 400 gallons of palm fronds, coconuts, branches and trimmings each week in resident-provided cans, carts or paper bags. Plastic bags are refused, and the city does not treat soil, coral, rocks, bricks or pavers as yard waste.
Furniture, mattresses, appliances and grills are collected curbside by grapple truck, up to two cubic yards free twice a year. Piles left against a fence, between parked cars and a wall, under overhead power lines, or blocking a sidewalk are not collected.
Key West's free bulk pickups exclude contractor remodeling waste and demolition debris, and garbage carts holding construction debris or tires will not be emptied. These materials need a separately quoted pickup or a self-haul to the transfer station, where a tipping fee applies.
The City Transfer Station refuses household hazardous waste, chemicals and electronics. Key West residents with identification can drop off computers, televisions and lithium-ion batteries free on the first Saturday of each month, and the city warns that lithium-ion batteries can start fires in collection trucks.
The Key West transfer station does not take mixed loads. Drivers arriving with combined materials are directed to unload garbage, yard waste, recyclables and metal in separate areas and weigh in and out for each, and payment is by credit card or commercial account only.
