The Problem

Clearing out a Washington house rarely goes smoothly

You check the town website, call about drop-off rules, and ask a few haulers for quotes. One answers, one wants to visit first, one never calls back. Weeks later, the junk is still in the barn.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Small towns like this one often have no regular bulk pickup at all. Where a municipal option exists, it usually means limited dates, item restrictions, and doing the loading and driving yourself. That works for a few bags, not a basement full of old furniture.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to walk the property before they'll quote, which means waiting at home for an appointment. Then the price is based on how much of the truck your load fills, and you often don't know what you'll pay until everything is already loaded.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers need items they can actually resell, so stained upholstery, worn mattresses, and broken pieces are usually turned away. You still have to load and drive everything there yourself, and whatever they won't accept comes back home with you.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off container takes up your driveway for days, may need permission depending on where it sits, and leaves you doing all the heavy lifting. On a narrow country road or a sloped lot, it's a lot of hassle for one cluttered room.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Local Disposal Rules

The Washington disposal rules most residents don't know

Pull up with a vehicle that has no sticker and you will be turned away from the transfer station. These are the disposal rules that apply in Washington, CT, in Litchfield County.

Rule 01

Renovation debris must reach the transfer station by 1:30 pm

Demolition loads need time for unloading and fee payment before the 2 pm closing, and the lower gate shuts at 1:55. Shingles are not accepted, and dump truck loads are no longer taken at the station.

Rule 02

Mattresses drop off free in Washington, but box springs do not

The Washington Transfer Station accepts mattresses at no charge, and residents are asked to notify the station before an intended drop-off. Box springs are not included in this program, so plan a separate disposal route for them.

Rule 03

Free curbside recycling runs on alternate Mondays, split by Route 109

Washington offers free single-stream curbside recycling with free bins from the Selectmen's Office, and separate calendars apply north and south of Route 109. Large bins should sit no more than 5 feet from the road.

Rule 04

Electronics are banned from Washington's garbage containers

Electronics must go into the dedicated e-waste container located with the recycling containers, never the rubbish bins. Dehumidifiers are excluded from the e-waste container, so they need a different disposal path. Connecticut DEEP lists the station as a residential electronics collection site.

Rule 05

Only waste from Washington homes is allowed at the station

Under the town's transfer station ordinance, everything deposited must originate within Washington and come from residential properties. Residents can obtain a short-term permit for their contractor's use through the Selectman's Office.

Rule 06

Washington has no town garbage pickup, only drop-off or private service

Households either obtain a vehicle sticker for the town transfer station or pay for private pick-up. Stickers are vehicle-specific, cannot be shared, and must sit on the passenger side lower windshield; without one, the driver is denied use of the station.

Yes. The town transfer station is on Clark Road, off Nettleton Hollow. It closes on days Town Offices are closed, and demolition loads should arrive by 1:30 pm to finish paying fees before the 2 pm closing. Check the town's posted regulations and fees first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Washington starts at $80, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking.

Same-day slots are sometimes open, but availability in small Litchfield Hills towns depends on route capacity that day. Enter your address at booking to see live openings for Washington Depot, New Preston, Marbledale or Woodville. Next-day is more likely.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. You can leave items out and add access notes at booking. For items inside the house, someone should be there, or you can give entry instructions. Your Loader sends a heads-up before arriving.

Large loads, renovation debris and bulky furniture can be hard to haul yourself, especially on rural Washington roads. Demolition loads have their own arrival cutoff at the transfer station and are charged fees. A hauler handles the lifting, loading and disposal, which helps when you lack a truck.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance at local charities and facilities. Items that can't be reused or recycled go to an appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition and what partners will take.

Choose your items online, enter your Washington address, and pick a time window. You see the price before you confirm. On pickup day, a Loader calls ahead, removes the items from the curb, driveway or inside your home, and hauls them away.

Pricing model and booking flow. Traditional haulers generally price by truckload and may quote on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before booking. For small jobs that can be cheaper, while a full-house cleanout may suit a truckload quote.
