The Problem

Getting junk out of Ellington takes more than it should

You read the town's waste rules, call a couple of haulers, and wait on quotes that never come back. Another weekend goes by, and the junk is still sitting in the garage or basement.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Town programs can help, but they often come with item limits, sign-up steps, or a set schedule that may not match yours. You also have to get heavy pieces out to the right spot yourself, which is hard without a truck or extra hands.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come out and look at the job before they give you a number. Then the price depends on how full the truck is, so you don't know the real cost until the work is done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift stores and charities have good reasons to turn things down, like stains, wear, or missing parts. Even if they take the nicer pieces, you still need a plan for the broken chair, the old carpet, and everything else they won't accept.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster can make sense for a full renovation. For a single room, it's a lot to deal with: a bin parked on your driveway for days, possible permit questions, delivery and pickup times to plan around, and you still have to load it yourself.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Local Disposal Rules

The Ellington disposal rules most residents don't know

Unscheduled bulky items or trash mixed with the wrong materials can be left at the curb with a written notice. These rules apply in Ellington, Tolland County.

Rule 01

Leaving an old fridge outside with its door on is a crime

It is a class D misdemeanor to abandon a refrigerator, ice box, or other airtight container outdoors without removing the door or lid, and each day counts as a separate offense. The Recycling Center has a designated appliance drop-off area.

Rule 02

Brush dump access requires a punch card for residents only

Since July 2024, the Hoffman Road Brush Dump has required a punch card from Public Works and proof of Ellington residency. It takes brush, leaves loose or in paper bags, and Christmas trees. The town does not collect yard waste at the curb.

Rule 03

Household hazardous waste now goes to regional events in Manchester

Ellington joined the Capitol Region East Operating Committee, so household hazardous waste collection events for residents are held in Manchester. Willington's collections are no longer open to Ellington households, and trash mixed with hazardous waste can be left uncollected.

Rule 04

Televisions skip curbside bulky waste and go to the Electronics Shed

Bulky waste pickup does not take televisions, and electronics, batteries, and light bulbs don't belong in the recycling bin. They go inside the Electronics Shed at the Recycling Center. Connecticut requires every town to accept televisions, monitors, computers, and printers.

Rule 05

Remodel debris has no place in bulky waste or brush

Construction and demolition debris is excluded from Ellington's curbside bulky waste service. The brush dump also refuses it, along with stumps and pressure-treated lumber. Leftover remodel debris such as old deck boards needs a separate disposal route.

Rule 06

Mattresses need staff approval before you drop them off

Connecticut covers mattresses under a product stewardship program. Ellington's Recycling Center needs prior approval from staff or the Public Works Office before it will accept mattresses, paint, or tires. Curbside pickup of mattresses and box springs through bulky waste has a per-item fee.

Only what the town's contracted hauler collects. Ellington's solid waste ordinance covers weekly trash pickup, and bulky waste and scrap metal are picked up on request, on the regular collection day. Anything left out without a request risks a citation.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Ellington starts at $80 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Often, yes. Same-day or next-day pickup is offered when you book before 12pm, depending on Loader availability for your address. Enter your address during booking to see which times are open.

Not for curbside or driveway pickups. Leave the items outside with access notes. For items inside a home, garage, or basement, someone should be there or you can leave access instructions when booking. Your Loader gives notice before arriving.

Under Ellington's solid waste ordinance, waste haulers must register with the Department of Public Works and get town approval before collecting or transporting waste. It's worth asking any hauler about this. Household hazardous waste is handled through separate town programs.

Loaders aim to donate usable items to local charities and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Items that can't be donated or recycled go to licensed disposal sites. Outcomes vary by item condition, so nothing is guaranteed.

Choose your item or items online, enter your Ellington address, and pick a pickup window. You see the price before you confirm. On pickup day, a Loader arrives, removes the items, and hauls them away without you lifting anything.

The main difference is the pricing model. Traditional haulers typically price by truckload, often after an estimate. LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. For a large cleanout that fills a truck, a truckload hauler may be a better fit.
