The Problem

Getting junk out of El Cerrito shouldn't take weeks

You look up the rules, call the hauler, request a few quotes, and wait on callbacks that never come. Meanwhile, the junk you meant to clear last month still has the garage, the hallway, or the side yard.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Bulky item pickups through the city's contracted hauler can help, but you usually have to book ahead, stay within set limits, and leave out items they won't take. You also still have to get everything to the curb yourself, even from a steep hillside driveway.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Lots of haulers want to see the job in person before they'll give you a number, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. You often won't know the real total until the truck is loaded, and by then it's hard to say no.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Thrift stores and donation centers have to be careful about what they accept, so stained, broken, or worn-out pieces often get turned away. Even when they do take your items, you still need a vehicle and some help to haul everything there.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster can take up your driveway or part of the street for days. You may need a permit if it sits on a public road, you have to plan around delivery and pickup, and your neighbors get a view of it. Clearing one room usually doesn't need all that.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Local Disposal Rules

The El Cerrito disposal rules most residents don't know

Bag it wrong or arrive on the wrong day, and items can be left at the curb or refused at drop-off. These rules apply in El Cerrito, Contra Costa County.

Rule 01

Yard trimmings in plastic bags stay on the curb

During East Bay Sanitary's free extra pickups for El Cerrito households, yard waste must go out in paper bags only. If you are clearing winter storm debris or overgrown beds, switch bags first, because yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

Rule 02

Televisions in wood cabinets are turned away from the e-waste bin

The El Cerrito Recycling Center now only takes electronics that contain circuit boards and hard drives, and televisions housed in wood are excluded. Mostly plastic electric appliances, radios, vacuums, and electric blankets also do not belong in the e-waste bin.

Rule 03

Block foam is accepted only on Thursdays with proof of residency

Polystyrene foam is not accepted in El Cerrito's blue curbside cart. The El Cerrito Recycling Center accepts clean white block Styrofoam only from El Cerrito residents and only on Thursdays, and residents must show proof of residency.

Rule 04

Two free large item pickups share one yearly limit

East Bay Sanitary gives residential account holders up to two free pickups per calendar year. Together they can't go over eight large items, such as furniture or appliances, or twenty-five 32-gallon bags, boxes, or bundles. More bulky items can be collected for a fee.

Rule 05

E-bike batteries are not accepted at the city drop-off

Batteries never go in any El Cerrito collection cart. The Recycling Center takes alkaline, NiCad, lithium, and lead-acid auto batteries, but not e-bike or electric vehicle batteries. East Bay Sanitary also offers free curbside battery pickup up to three times a year.

Rule 06

Loose cardboard is skipped on the annual recycling pickup

El Cerrito's free annual recycling pickup must be booked at least a week ahead. It takes cardboard only when it is bundled and no larger than 36 by 36 inches. Loose cardboard is not picked up, and the city does not clean the street when materials are bundled wrong.

Not without an arranged pickup. Junk dumped on a street, sidewalk, park, or the Ohlone Greenway counts as illegal dumping. You can report it to the city at (510) 215-4369. Check with your hauler about scheduled bulky pickups first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in El Cerrito starts at $75, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, depending on Loader availability for your address. Entering your address during booking shows live openings, including same-day and next-day slots. For curbside pickups you don't need to be home, and for in-home jobs someone should be there or leave access instructions.

Hazardous items shouldn't go in regular trash or a junk haul. The El Cerrito Recycling Center at 7501 Schmidt Lane takes household hazardous waste on Tuesdays, and the West County facility in Richmond is open Wednesday through Saturday. Bring proof of residency.

The city says furniture, appliances, and construction debris can go to a local transfer station for a fee. That can be the cheaper route if you have a truck and time. Hauling it away is the better fit if you lack a vehicle or have heavy loads.

Loaders aim to donate usable items to local charities and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Items that can't be reused or recycled go to the appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition, so nothing is guaranteed.

You book online, pick a time window, and see your price upfront. Your Loader typically gives notice before arriving, then removes and loads the items. Hillside homes with stairs or tight access are worth mentioning in your booking notes.

The main difference is pricing and booking. Truck-based haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King generally price by how much space your load fills, often confirmed on site. LoadUp prices per item online, with the total confirmed before you book.
