Junk has a way of piling up until it becomes one more thing on the to-do list. Book a quick pickup in Atherton, see your price upfront, and get your space back.
You check the town's hauler rules, call a few companies, wait on callbacks that never come and compare vague quotes. Weeks later, the garage is still full and the pile by the side yard hasn't moved.
Municipal pickup schedules can handle some bulky items, but they usually need advance booking, limit how much you can set out and turn away things like renovation debris or hazardous materials. If you're clearing out a whole guest house or need it gone this week, that's a hard fit.
Many haulers want to come out and look before they'll give you a price, and then quote by fractions of a truckload you can't easily picture. The number can change once loading starts, so you don't really know what you'll pay until the truck is full.
Donation centers have to be choosy about condition, so stained upholstery, worn mattresses and broken furniture often get turned away. You still have to load and drive everything there yourself, and whatever they won't take comes right back home with you.
A roll-off container brings delivery windows, possible permits for street placement and weeks of a steel box sitting where the neighbors can see it. You still do all the lifting yourself, and for one room of old furniture, most of that space goes unused.

If storm-fallen branches or a stack of old pavers already sit by the driveway, curbside covers it. For an attic, basement or outbuilding set back on a wooded lot, choose full-service so your Loaders can carry everything out, and share any gate or access notes when you book.

Atherton has no downtown to pop into, so a dump run means leaving town and sitting in Peninsula traffic with a loaded truck bed. Skip it. Your Loaders carry out the old patio set or garage pile and haul it away, and they genuinely enjoy showing up for neighbors here.
A garage full of old gear or a guest house being emptied raises one question: where does it all go? In Atherton, your Loader sorts items by condition, aiming to keep usable pieces out of landfills when local options allow.
Furniture, sports equipment and household goods in good, clean condition may be set aside for donation where available. Your Loader can take them to a local charity when possible. Do not expect a receipt, so contact the organization directly if you need one.
Items that are worn or damaged but not fit for donation, such as metal frames, scrap wood or some appliances, may be recycled when local options allow. Your Loader sorts these pieces during loading, and available outlets can vary.
Heavily damaged, soiled or broken bulky items, like a ruined sofa or water-damaged cabinetry from a remodel, go to an appropriate disposal site. Your Loader hauls them away so nothing is left behind on your property.
Putting banned items in the cart or skipping a required permit can lead to rejected pickups or penalties. These are the rules that apply in Atherton and San Mateo County.
California classifies TVs, computer monitors and other electronics as universal waste, along with household batteries and fluorescent lamps. They contain lead, mercury and other metals, so they cannot go in any Atherton cart. They must go to an approved recycler or collection site.
Pressure-treated lumber from fences, decks and retaining walls contains preservative chemicals. California rules forbid burning it, mixing it with untreated wood or putting it in the garbage cart. It must go to a facility authorized to accept treated wood waste.
Under the town's contract with GreenWaste Recovery, each household can request two on-call cleanups a year at no extra charge. Each one covers up to two cubic yards of material, one large appliance, one bulky item and one e-waste item. Extra bulky pickups cost a fee and need 48 hours' notice.
Atherton protects heritage trees, including native oaks. Removing one without a town permit can bring penalties and replacement requirements. Once branches and trimmings are legally cut, California's SB 1383 organics law means they go in the green cart, not the garbage.
Under California's mattress recycling law, buyers pay a small fee at purchase that funds the Bye Bye Mattress program. Residents can drop off used mattresses and box springs at participating collection sites for free. Recycling recovers steel, foam and fiber that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Atherton's exclusive collection contract covers debris box service, with only a few narrow exceptions. Permitted projects must also meet California's CALGreen standard, which generally requires recycling or reusing at least 65 percent of nonhazardous construction and demolition debris instead of landfilling it.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Atherton starts at $75, and curbside or outdoor pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee and each additional item is a flat add-on, with the exact total confirmed before booking.
Often, but it depends on Loader availability for your address and the time you book. Enter your address during booking to see open slots. For outdoor pickups you usually don't need to be home, but indoor jobs need someone present or access instructions.
Household hazardous waste like paint, solvents, and chemicals can't go in the trash. San Mateo County residents can take it to the county's household hazardous waste program, which caps drop-offs at 10 gallons or 50 pounds per appointment.
Loaders aim to donate usable items to local charities and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance. Whatever can't be donated or recycled goes to an appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item condition, so nothing is guaranteed to be diverted.
You book online, choose your items and a time window, and see your total before confirming. On pickup day your Loader arrives, removes the items from where you've pointed, and loads them up. Big lots mean it helps to note exactly where the items are.
The main difference is the pricing model. College HUNKS offers free estimates, and traditional haulers generally price by truck space. LoadUp prices per item online, so your total is set before booking. For large cleanouts, a truckload hauler may fit better.
Regular junk pickup doesn't need a permit, but building or demolition permits in Atherton require a waste recycling plan and a cash deposit of $50 per estimated ton of debris. That is refunded when the required diversion is documented. Ask the building department for details.
