The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Hāwī takes more than it should

You look up county rules, call a few haulers, and wait on callbacks that never come. One wants to visit first, another never answers. Weeks go by, and the junk is still sitting in your carport.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Hawaii County bulk pickup programs can work if your timing and items fit. Some materials aren't accepted, a pickup usually has to be requested ahead of time, and the heavy lifting to get things out to the road is still up to you.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Lots of haulers want to come look before they give you a number, and that visit can take a while this far up the island. Then the price is based on how much of the truck you fill, so you don't know what you'll pay until loading is done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donating makes sense for furniture in good shape, but sorting centers turn away items that are stained, broken, or worn out from years of salt air. Anything they refuse is still yours to get rid of, and you still have to haul it there first.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster has to be scheduled, delivered, and picked up again, and some locations need a permit. On a narrow rural lot or a shared road, it can block access and annoy neighbors for days, which is a lot of hassle for one cleared-out room.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Hāwī and the North Kohala communities along Akoni Pule Highway

Out here, getting rid of an old sofa or a pile of green waste often means a borrowed truck and a long drive, and nobody needs that on their day off. Your Loaders like showing up for Hāwī families, shop owners, and absentee owners alike, and they carry the heavy part so you don't have to.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items are hard to move alone, and in a remote community like Hāwī, where options on the island are limited, where an item ends up matters. Your Loader sorts by condition, using donation, recycling, or disposal when local options allow.

Gently Used

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods that are clean and still usable may be donated when local options allow. Your Loader can set these items aside, but you should not expect a donation receipt.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn or damaged but still hold usable material, like metal frames or appliances, may be recycled where available. Island options are narrower than on the mainland, so this is not guaranteed.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged or contaminated bulky items, such as soaked mattresses or broken furniture, are hauled away by your Loader for disposal at a suitable county facility. Which facility depends on what the item is and what is open.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The Hāwī disposal rules most residents don't know

A load with a banned material or the wrong vehicle can be refused at the gate, so these are the rules that apply in Hāwī and across Hawaii County.

Rule 01

Trailers and dump bed trucks cannot enter any transfer station

Since April 2021, Hawaii County has limited transfer station vehicles to sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans islandwide. Trailers remain allowed at the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill, which accepts all solid waste except prohibited and special handling materials.

Rule 02

Canec and asbestos building materials are banned at transfer stations

Hawaii County prohibits asbestos and canec building material waste at every Recycling and Transfer Station, including Hāwī. Canec, a sugarcane fiberboard, turns up in many older plantation-era homes, so renovation debris from these houses needs a different disposal route than household rubbish.

Rule 03

Invasive plant clippings get an exception to the greenwaste rule

At stations with a dedicated greenwaste area, yard trimmings are barred from the rubbish chute even when that area is closed, so loads wait for the next collection day. The one exception is greenwaste classified as an invasive species.

Rule 04

Hāwī takes old appliances, but only one per day

Hāwī is one of the county's appliance collection sites, open Monday through Saturday and closed Sundays. Refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, washing machines and clothes dryers must be clean, empty and drained, and only one item is allowed per customer or vehicle per day.

Rule 05

Dumped chemicals can shut down the Hāwī station for days

Radioactive or chemical waste, explosives and live ammunition are prohibited at county solid waste facilities. In September 2024, nitric acid improperly dumped at the Hāwī transfer station forced the county to close it for nearly a week.

Rule 06

Bulky items longer than seven feet must be cut down first

Hawaii County caps any single solid waste item at 7 feet or less in any dimension at its transfer stations, so long lumber, carpet rolls and oversized furniture must be broken down to size before the trip.

Not unless a scheduled pickup is arranged. Leaving junk on a roadside or vacant lot counts as illegal dumping in Hawaii County and can bring fines. Hawaii County residents can usually take household waste to a county transfer station, so check current hours and accepted items first.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Hāwī starts at $95 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes a flat $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, and each additional item is a flat add-on charge. The exact total is confirmed before booking.

Sometimes, but availability depends on Loader coverage near Hāwī on that day. Rural North Kohala is far from larger Hawaiʻi Island towns, so next-day or scheduled slots are more common. Enter your address during booking to see the real openings for your location.

Hazardous items such as paint, solvents, batteries, and chemicals generally can't go in household trash or a standard haul. Large items and appliances often need special handling at county facilities. Check Hawaii County's current rules before loading anything you're unsure about.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle materials whenever options allow, depending on acceptance by local organizations. Items that can't be reused or recycled go to an appropriate disposal facility. Donation and recycling aren't guaranteed for every item, especially on a remote island with limited outlets.

You book online, pick your item and time window, and see your price before confirming. Your Loader arrives in that window, removes the junk from where it sits, and handles the loading. For curbside pickups you don't need to be home, but indoor pickups need access.

The main difference is pricing. Traditional haulers like 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk King usually price by truckload and may confirm the cost on site. LoadUp prices per item online, so your total is set before anyone arrives. For large cleanouts, a truckload hauler can sometimes fit better.
