After the heavy, wet snowstorm in March 2023, the Highway Department made one pass through town from south to north to collect storm-damaged branches from the curb. Residents were asked to put larger ends facing the road. Anyone who missed it could bring brush to the Transfer Station for free.
The Town tells residents to sign up with a commercial garbage service or use the Transfer Station, which is open to Halfmoon residents only. You pay for household trash there with a punch card, and each punch covers one 30-gallon bag.
Town cleanup notices list a fee for each refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, water cooler and dehumidifier. All of these appliances hold refrigerant. Bulk metal, scrap metal and other metal appliances are accepted at the Transfer Station free of charge.
The Transfer Station accepts construction debris only during the spring and fall cleanups. The cleanups are limited to Town residents who have a free Transfer Station permit, and contractors and businesses can't take part.
New York's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act says households can't throw covered electronics out with regular garbage. The Halfmoon Transfer Station is on the state's list of e-waste collection sites and takes electronics from residents for free all year.
