The Problem

Getting rid of junk in Evanston takes longer than it should

You search for options, call the city, request a few hauler quotes, and wait. Some never call back. Others want to visit first. Meanwhile the old furniture stays in the basement for another month.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

City bulk pickup programs can be a good deal for one or two items set out properly. They usually need a request ahead of time, don't accept every item, and expect you to get everything to the pickup spot yourself, which is hard from a third-floor walk-up.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to see the job in person before they'll give you a number, then charge by how much of the truck you fill. You don't know the real cost until they're standing in your driveway and you've already cleared the afternoon.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers want items they can resell, so stained upholstery, worn mattresses, and broken appliances often get turned away. You still have to load and drive everything there yourself, and whatever they refuse comes back home with you.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A dumpster makes sense for a gut renovation, not for a cleared-out spare room. It needs a delivery window and a place to park it, and on narrow Evanston blocks it can take up shared space your neighbors use for days.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving Evanston, from Howard Street to the Lake Michigan shore

Nobody is wedging a box spring onto the Purple Line, and a borrowed pickup rarely finds an easy parking spot on a busy block. That's where your Loader comes in, lifting, carrying, and loading so you can skip the circling. Your Loaders genuinely enjoy showing up for Evanston neighbors, and it shows.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Bulky items can't all go the same place, and Evanston's mix of older houses, apartments, and rental turnovers means a wide range of conditions. Your Loader sorts each item by condition, favoring donation or recycling when local options allow.

Local Disposal Rules

The Evanston disposal rules most residents don't know

Banned materials left out in Evanston, Cook County, go uncollected, and City crews will not return for late set-outs. These are the local rules that shape a cleanout here.

Rule 01

Appliances and tires get their own free City collection

Appliances and tires are banned from the landfill, so Evanston schedules them through 311 separately from special pickups. They are removed free of charge and do not count toward a household's annual cubic-yard limit for bulk waste.

Rule 02

Remodeling debris is refused by both carts and special pickups

Evanston does not allow construction materials in its City-branded refuse carts, and City special pickups will not collect construction material either. Leftover renovation debris has to go somewhere outside the residential waste program.

Rule 03

Bulk pickups are now scheduled through 311 year-round

In April 2026 a three-year City pilot replaced the spring and fall bulk trash days. Single-family homes and small multiunit buildings can book pickups of up to 3 cubic yards each, about a couch or twin mattress, with a limit of 12 cubic yards per unit each year.

Rule 04

Raking leaves into Evanston streets is illegal and causes flooding

Leaves raked or blown into the street can block sewers and cause flooding, so the City bans it and allows only electric leaf blowers. Food and yard waste collection now runs all year and switches to every other week from December through March.

Rule 05

Illinois law keeps electronics out of the trash entirely

It is illegal in Illinois to throw electronics in the garbage, and Evanston lists electronics as a prohibited item in its refuse carts. The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County holds free electronics collections for its member communities.

Rule 06

Paint, batteries and pesticides are excluded from special pickups

Evanston's special pickups will not take hazardous materials, including batteries, gas, oil, asbestos, pesticides, medical wastes and paint. Leftover house paint can go to a PaintCare drop-off site at no charge instead.

Not without a scheduled pickup. Evanston's special bulk pilot lets residential accounts book extra pickups through the 311 Center. Each pickup is capped at 3 cubic yards, roughly a couch, with a 12 cubic yard annual limit per unit. Items left out unscheduled risk being treated as dumping.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in Evanston starts at $80, with $5 off for curbside or driveway pickup. The first item includes the base pickup fee and each additional item is a flat add-on, with the exact total confirmed before booking. Truckload haulers often quote $150 to $750.

Same-day pickup is often available in Evanston when you book early enough, and next-day slots are common. Availability depends on your address and the schedule that day, so enter your zip during booking to see live options. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home.

No for hazardous waste. Evanston does not collect household hazardous materials like paint or chemicals, and points residents to IEPA collection sites around Chicagoland. Bulk pickup is also limited to 3 cubic yards per visit, so larger cleanouts usually need a private hauler or a dumpster.

Loaders aim to keep usable items out of the landfill by donating them to local charities when options allow, such as Goodwill locations nearby. Recyclable materials like metal and some electronics go to recyclers depending on acceptance. Whatever can't be donated or recycled is disposed of properly.

You pick your items and zip code online, see the price, and choose a time window. Your Loader typically calls or texts before arriving, then carries the items out and loads them, so you don't lift anything. The total is confirmed before booking, with no in-person estimate required.

Mainly the pricing model. College HUNKS prices by how much truck space your items need, while LoadUp prices per item online and locks the total before booking. For a few items that can be simpler, but for a full house cleanout a truckload quote may suit you better.

For a couch-sized load, the city's pilot is cheaper. It's funded by a $1 per unit monthly fee on residential accounts, but you wait for a 311 slot and face the 3 cubic yard limit. A private hauler costs more but offers faster scheduling and removes larger loads.
