The Problem

Getting rid of junk in China takes more than a free Saturday

You look up what the transfer station takes, borrow a truck that never shows up, and call haulers who never call back. Meanwhile the old couch stays in the barn for another season.

Free city pickup is great, when it works

Small Maine towns like China usually rely on a transfer station instead of city bulk pickup programs. That still leaves you loading everything yourself, checking which items are accepted, and making the drive during open hours. That's hard when you can't lift a sleeper sofa alone.

Traditional haulers play pricing games

Many haulers want to come out and look before they give you a number, and getting one to a rural road can take days. Pricing by the truckload means you don't really know the cost until the job is done.

Donation centers are picky (rightly)

Donation centers need items they can actually resell, so stained mattresses, worn recliners, and broken appliances often get turned away. Even items they do accept usually have to be dropped off by you, which might mean a trip toward Augusta or Waterville.

Dumpster rental is overkill for one room

A roll-off dumpster makes sense for a full gut renovation. For clearing out one shed or a spare room, you're paying for a box you won't fill, booking delivery and pickup windows, and leaving a large container on your driveway or lawn for days.

What sets us apart

Your price is locked before pickup day

Most companies charge by truck space, and the price often changes on arrival. LoadUp charges by item, based on exactly what you're removing.

  • Per-item, predictable. First item includes the pickup fee. Every add-on is flat, no truck math, no hourly rates.
  • Locked means locked. The price at booking is what you pay. No adjustments, no surprises.
  • No-obligation quotes. Big job or full cleanout? Text a photo for a guaranteed price first.

Neighborhoods Served

Serving China, Maine, around the lake and up the back roads

Nobody in China loves loading a sagging sofa into a pickup, bumping down a long gravel driveway, and burning half a morning on a dump run. Mud season doesn't help either. Your Loaders carry it out, load it up, and haul it away, because folks here already do plenty for themselves and deserve a hand.

What Happens to Your Junk

Donation first, recycling second, landfill last

Out in China, a heavy sofa or a rusted freezer rarely has an easy way out of the barn or basement. Where each item ends up depends on its condition, and your Loader sorts accordingly.

Donation Pickup

Furniture and household goods in good, clean shape may be donated when possible, depending on what local options allow. Please don't expect paperwork or a tax receipt from the pickup.

  • Tax-deductible receipt by request
  • Diverts waste from landfill
  • Free up your space and help a neighbor

Visible Wear

Recycling

Items that are worn but not fit for donation, like scrap metal or dented appliances, may be recycled where available. Acceptance varies, especially for electronics, mattresses, and anything with refrigerants.

  • Materials sorted and recovered
  • Diverted from landfill where possible
  • Compliant with local waste regs

Heavily Damaged

Responsible Disposal

Heavily damaged or contaminated bulky items, such as water-soaked couches or rotted decking, go to disposal. Your Loader handles the lifting and hauling, so you skip the transfer station trip.

  • No logistics or transport to handle
  • No sorting or drop-off required on your end
  • Local disposal fees covered

Local Disposal Rules

The China disposal rules most residents don't know

If you pull up to the transfer station without a vehicle access sticker, you can make the trip for nothing. These are the rules that apply in China, Kennebec County.

Rule 01

Old televisions and computer monitors stay out of the trash

Maine law keeps televisions, computer monitors and other covered electronics out of household trash because they contain lead and other hazardous materials. Instead, they are recycled through the state's manufacturer-funded electronics program, which collects them at municipal drop-off points.

Rule 02

Camp cleanouts need a permit for every vehicle

Since January 1, 2024, every vehicle entering the China transfer station must have an access permit sticker. This includes vehicles of camp and seasonal property owners, so a second truck or a borrowed pickup hauling cleanout loads needs its own permit.

Rule 03

Usable household goods can go to Free for the Taking

The transfer station has a Free for the Taking area where reusable goods can find a new home instead of being thrown away. Only China and Palermo residents can use it, and the area has its own posted rules.

Rule 04

Fluorescent tubes and CFLs are regulated for their mercury

Maine treats mercury-containing lamps as universal waste, so fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs can't go in household trash. When cleaning out a workshop or basement, keep these lamps whole, because broken ones release mercury vapor.

Rule 05

Leftover paint, primers and sealers have a station drop-off

China residents can bring latex paint, oil-based paint, shellacs, primers and sealers to the transfer station. They don't need to dry them out or bag them with trash. A basement or garage cleanout is a good time to gather these old cans.

Rule 06

Recycling at the station is limited to two towns

Only China and Palermo residents can recycle at the China Transfer Station's Recycling Center. If relatives or friends from other towns help with a cleanout, they'll need to take recyclables back to their own town's program.

China has no curbside bulk pickup that I could confirm. Residents bring items to the transfer station at 191 Alder Park Rd, open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 7am-5pm and Saturday 7am-3pm. Call (207) 445-2014, option 2, with questions.

Yes. Since January 1, 2024, every vehicle entering the China transfer station must have an access permit. It costs $2 per year per vehicle and is only issued to vehicles registered in China, with limited exceptions for camp and seasonal owners.

LoadUp pricing for junk removal in China starts at $80 for a single item, and curbside or driveway pickup takes $5 off. The first item includes the base pickup fee, each additional item is a flat add-on charge, and the exact total is confirmed before booking.

Same-day availability depends on the schedule and how far a crew is from China, so it isn't guaranteed. Enter your address during booking to see open times. For curbside pickups you generally don't need to be home, and indoor jobs need access arranged.

Anything that isn't ordinary kitchen household trash is treated as demolition debris and must be weighed for a disposal fee. Check with an attendant before unloading. Metal and waste oil are accepted free during business hours, and brush under 12 inches across is accepted.

Loaders aim to donate usable items and recycle what they can, depending on acceptance, and avoid landfill whenever options allow. Anything that can't be donated or recycled goes to an appropriate disposal facility. Outcomes vary by item and condition.

Often yes for a small load, if your vehicle is registered in China and you already have a transfer station permit. You pay only any weighed demolition fees. Hiring out makes sense when you lack a truck, have heavy items, or want it gone without lifting.

LoadUp prices per item online and confirms the total before booking. Many traditional haulers, such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK, price by truckload and may give an estimate on site. Per-item pricing tends to suit small jobs, while truckload pricing can suit full cleanouts.
