Two neighbors on the same Cincinnati street can follow completely different trash pickup rules and both be right. One sets out an old lamp and a broken chair next to the garbage cart without scheduling anything. The other has to request an appointment, hit an exact setout window, and risk real fines if either one goes wrong. The difference isn’t the street. It’s the size of what’s going out.
Cincinnati bulk item pickup actually runs on two separate systems, and most residents don’t find out which one applies to them until they’re already standing over something that needs to go. Guess wrong, and the easy path turns into the complicated one, sometimes with real consequences attached.
Here’s how to tell which system applies to you, the two ways people get cited without meaning to, what Cincinnati will and won’t take curbside, and what changes once you’re outside city limits.
In this guide:
Small items vs. bulk items in Cincinnati: the distinction that matters
Cincinnati splits disposal into two tracks, and knowing which one an item belongs to determines whether you need to do anything at all.
| Track | Size limit | Scheduling |
|---|---|---|
| Small extra items | Under 40 lbs, no larger than 3′ x 2′ x 2′. Up to 3 per week. | None. Place next to your garbage cart on your regular collection day. |
| True bulk items | Anything larger. Up to 5 per scheduled collection. | Required. Schedule through 311 before it goes anywhere near the curb. |
Bulk items get picked up by a specialized truck with an arm and claw attachment, which is why they can’t just ride along with the regular crew the way a small lamp or a broken chair can.
How to schedule Cincinnati’s Bulk Item Collection
The City of Cincinnati’s Bulk Item Collection is free through the Department of Public Services. Schedule online at 311Cincy.com, through the 311Cincy app, or by calling 311 (513-765-1212). A pickup date gets assigned the moment you submit the request, and you can confirm it by email or by looking up your request online.
Setout rules
- Curbside no earlier than 5 PM the day before, no later than 6 AM on collection day
- Collection happens on your regular collection day, or on Fridays
- Items need a clear path for automated pickup: no low-hanging wires, branches, or parked cars blocking access
- Only eligible for City of Cincinnati trash service addresses: single-family homes and residential buildings with 4 or fewer units
The two ways this turns into a citation
Cincinnati’s own rules are specific about this, and neither one is a soft warning.
- More than 5 items: the property owner gets cited for illegal set-out
- Set out before 5 PM the day before: also a citation, regardless of how many items are actually out there
Missed your pickup? Wait until after 4 PM on your scheduled day, then call 311 to report it.

What Cincinnati bulk item pickup accepts, and what it doesn’t
| Item | Accepted? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture | Yes | Counts toward your 5-item limit |
| Mattresses | Yes | Counts toward your 5-item limit |
| Large appliances | Yes | Refrigerant must be removed first |
| Electronics | No | Requires a designated drop-off facility, not standard bulk collection |
| Household hazardous waste, batteries | No | Designated drop-off only |
| Tires | No | A completely separate 311 request process, not part of bulk collection |
| Construction or demolition debris | No | Not eligible for standard bulk pickup at all |
One category that doesn’t fit neatly into either track: yard waste. Cincinnati collects it biweekly on your recycling day, from late April through the second week of January, completely separate from both the small-items and bulk-items systems above.
For yard debris outside that window, or in larger volume than the biweekly cart can handle, LoadUp’s yard debris removal services can cover the gap.
Hamilton County bulk trash pickup: a different hauler, a different rulebook
The City of Cincinnati’s free Bulk Item Collection only applies to addresses that receive City of Cincinnati trash service. If a private company like Rumpke or Republic handles your trash, which is the case for most Hamilton County suburbs, you’re unfortunately not eligible for the City’s program. Not a smaller version of it. Not eligible at all.
Blue Ash
Blue Ash uses Rumpke under a city contract. Furniture and most appliances get collected curbside on your scheduled pickup day. Appliances with Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners) are the one exception. Those need a separate path through the Residential Drop-Off Program. Schedule a large item pickup directly with Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.
Blue Ash also runs its own drop-off option: the Service Department Center at 6131 Interstate Circle takes furniture, appliances, and brush, plus hazardous materials like oil, paint, and old gas. One more local quirk worth knowing: Blue Ash collects on every holiday except New Year’s Day and Christmas Day, so there’s no week-long holiday delay the way some cities handle it.
Norwood
Norwood also uses Rumpke, billed through the city’s Public Service Department. Billing questions go to 513-458-4518. For everything else, including scheduling a large item pickup, call Rumpke directly at 513-742-2900 or 800-828-8171. Confirm current item limits and any exclusions directly with Rumpke before setting anything out.
The pattern across Hamilton County: the hauler may be the same name from suburb to suburb, but the rules, the contact number, and what’s excluded can all be different. Check your specific city before assuming anything carries over. For private hauling, LoadUp serves Blue Ash and Norwood as well.

Cincinnati’s Uptown move-out surge: UC and off-campus bulk trash
University of Cincinnati’s on-campus housing empties out by May 2nd, but that move-out is mostly handled inside the university system: RAs checking students out, campus crews managing the turnover. It doesn’t create much curbside disposal demand on its own.
The real surge happens later. Most off-campus leases in Uptown Cincinnati run through July 31st. UC’s own housing office describes what that week has historically looked like: furniture, electronics, and trash left on the street or overflowing the dumpsters, as an entire neighborhood turns over leases on the same day. The university now runs a donation diversion event around that date specifically because of how much usable furniture used to just get abandoned.
A 5-item appointment cap, scheduled days out, doesn’t move fast enough for a landlord or property manager clearing several units on the same July turnover date. For a full apartment cleanout before new tenants arrive, that’s where a private hauler earns its keep.
If items are still in decent shape, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati’s ReStore offers free donation pickup, or drop-off at one of its four locations, Tuesday through Friday 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM.
When to call a private hauler
Neither of those two neighbors from the start of this guide had a problem, because neither one broke a rule. Cincinnati’s system works fine as long as you stay inside the lines: 5 items, right timing, right address. Step outside any one of those, and the system stops being the answer.
Booking junk removal with a private hauler might be a better fit if:
- You have more than 5 bulk items and can’t spread them across multiple scheduled collections
- You can’t wait for your assigned 311 appointment date
- You have heavy items that need to be carried out from inside your home (city and suburb programs both collect curbside only)
- You have a refrigerator or freezer and don’t want to deal with removal yourself
- You’re managing a July move-out turnover with several units on the same deadline
- You’re in a Hamilton County suburb with no bulk program you’re eligible for
When 311’s rules don’t fit the job, LoadUp provides junk removal and bulk item pickup across Cincinnati and Hamilton County with same-day and next-day availability. No 5-item cap, no appointment window, no citation risk for getting the timing wrong. Loaders can carry items out from inside your home, regardless of what floor they’re on.
LoadUp runs 20-30% below what most junk removal companies charge for comparable work in Cincinnati, and offers a price match guarantee for any written quote for the same service.
