If you haven’t put anything out for bulk pickup in Austin, TX since before 2025, forget everything you think you know about how it works. There’s no neighborhood cleanup week anymore. No waiting for your part of town to get its turn. The city tore that whole system out and replaced it with something closer to booking a dentist appointment: you request a date, you show up for it, and if you miss the window, the truck doesn’t come back.
Austin bulk item pickup now runs entirely on demand, and it’s not just bulk. Brush, household hazardous waste, and clothing all got the same treatment, each with its own appointment type and its own limit. Treat any of them like the old system and something will go wrong, usually a missed pickup or a pile that just sits there.
Here’s exactly how the new system works, the specific way items need to be sorted at the curb, what the suburbs are doing differently, and what to do when three appointments a year isn’t enough.
In this guide:
How Austin’s on-demand bulk pickup actually works
Since January 2025, Austin Resource Recovery collects bulk items, brush, household hazardous waste, and clothing and textiles entirely by appointment. The old semiannual neighborhood collection weeks are gone.
- Each service gets its own 3 collections per calendar year, per address
- Schedule through the Austin Recycles app or by calling 311 (512-974-2000)
- Eligible only for Austin Resource Recovery residential curbside customers
- Appointments available on weekdays
Setout rules, and there’s no grace period
- Curbside by 5:30 AM on your confirmed appointment date
- Crews can arrive early. They will not return for items set out late.
- No setouts from alleys, business frontages, or vacant lots
- Do not use bags, boxes, or containers for bulk items; bagged items may get billed as extra trash instead
- Keep bulk items separate from your regular carts, and separate from brush if you’ve scheduled both
Missed pickup? Call 311 or email Austin Resource Recovery after 4 PM on your scheduled day.

Austin’s three-pile rule most people get wrong
This is the single most common way an Austin bulk appointment goes sideways. Items don’t just get set at the curb together. They get sorted into three separate piles, and getting it wrong risks the crew skipping your pickup entirely.
| Pile | What goes in it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Metal items and rigid plastics | Appliances, electronics, rigid plastics | Appliance doors must be removed before setout |
| Non-metal items | Carpeting, lumber | Lumber must have nails removed |
| Tires | Passenger tires | Up to 8, rims removed |
Three separate piles for one appointment is a different mental model than most cities use. It’s the detail that trips up residents who are used to pushing everything into one load at the curb.
Austin bulk, brush, HHW, and clothing: four different appointments
These aren’t four names for one program. They’re four separate on-demand services, each with its own independent 3-per-year budget that doesn’t borrow from the others.
| Service | What it covers | Limit | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulk | Furniture, mattresses, appliances, large household items too big for your cart | 3 per year | Sorted into three piles (see above) |
| Brush | Large brush, branches, tree limbs | 3 per year | Must be 5 to 15 feet long. Shorter yard waste goes in your regular compost cart, no appointment needed |
| Household Hazardous Waste | Paint, chemicals, similar materials | 3 per year | Roughly 30 gallons per appointment; more needs a second appointment or a trip to the Recycle and Reuse Center |
| Clothing and Textiles | Clothing, textiles | 3 per year | A separate service from the other three |
What’s never accepted, regardless of appointment
- Automotive chassis and bodies, boats, motorcycles, trailers
- Cardboard boxes, mirrors, sheet glass, tile
- Construction or demolition debris
- Hazardous materials outside the HHW appointment
- Household trash, tires still mounted on rims
Austin’s Recycle and Reuse Center
When you’ve used your appointments for the year, or an item just doesn’t fit any of the four categories, the Recycle and Reuse Center is a self-haul option.
- Address: 2514 Business Center Drive, Austin, TX 78744
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM
- Appointment only, no walk-ins
- Free for Austin and Travis County residents; fees apply for non-residents and for tires
- Accepts HHW, electronics, appliances, recyclables, and reuse materials
One exception worth knowing: brush and yard trimmings are not accepted here. Those go to Austin Water’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant instead, open 8 AM to 3 PM, no appointment required.
Not sure where a specific item belongs? Austin’s own What Do I Do With search tool answers that question item by item, faster than guessing.

Austin suburbs run separate programs, and some just changed too
Austin Resource Recovery only serves addresses inside Austin city limits. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Kyle, and Buda all run their own separate programs, and three of them look nothing alike.
| City | Model | Limit | Hauler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austin | On-demand appointment | 3 per year, per service (4 services) | Austin Resource Recovery |
| Round Rock | On-demand appointment | 1 per year | Republic Services |
| Cedar Park | Ongoing weekly allowance, no appointment | Up to 7 items per week | Republic Services |
Round Rock
Round Rock dropped its fixed Spring Clean-Up week the same month Austin changed, January 2025.
- 1 free bulk pickup per calendar year, scheduled through Republic Services at 512-255-4980, at least a week ahead
- Up to 5 cubic yards, curbside by 7 AM
- Accepted: non-Freon appliances, furniture, scrap metal, lumber (4 ft or shorter, fasteners removed), mattresses
- Not accepted: Freon appliances, automotive products, brush, chemicals, construction debris, paint, tires, TVs
- Freon appliance recycling: Appliance Collector, 512-650-0528
Cedar Park
Cedar Park works completely differently and doesn’t require an appointment at all.
- Up to 7 extra bags or bulk items every week, alongside regular trash, through Republic Services at 512-215-5050
- Curbside by 7 AM, carts at least 3 feet apart
- Accepted: washers, dryers, stoves, mattresses, refrigerant-free refrigerators (door removed), Freon appliances tagged by a licensed technician
- Not accepted: hazardous waste, construction material, TVs, tires
- Need more than the weekly allowance covers? A special collection is available for a fee through Republic Services
Pflugerville and Georgetown
Both run their own separate programs as well. Confirm current rules directly with your city before setting anything out, since we don’t have as much confirmed detail on these two as we do for Round Rock and Cedar Park.
The pattern across the Austin metro: three cities within a 20-minute drive of each other, three completely different systems, on-demand with 3 slots a year, on-demand with 1 slot a year, and an ongoing weekly allowance with no appointment at all. For private hauling, LoadUp serves Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville as well.
UT Austin’s two move-out surges
Most college markets in this country see one move-out surge a year, in May. UT Austin-adjacent housing sees two. West Campus, North Campus, and Hyde Park all run on a twice-a-year lease cycle, which means a real disposal spike in both May and August.
A 3-per-year bulk appointment limit doesn’t stretch far for a landlord or property manager turning over several units on the same lease date, especially if earlier appointments in the year are already spent. For a full apartment turnover on a tight timeline, that’s where a private hauler like LoadUp earns its keep.
When to call a private hauler
Austin’s bulk pickup program works fine for routine disposal over a 12 month period, but it falls apart fast the moment a job is bigger than three visits, or you can’t wait for the next available date.
Booking junk removal with a private hauler might be a better fit if:
- You’ve used all 3 appointments for a service this year and need more before it resets
- You can’t wait for the next open on-demand date
- You need items carried out from inside your home (Austin and suburb programs only collect curbside)
- You have a mixed load of bulk, brush, and clothing that would otherwise need three separate appointments
- You’re managing a May or August UT-area move-out with several units on the same deadline
- You’re in a suburb with a smaller allowance, like Round Rock’s 1-per-year limit
When the on-demand system doesn’t fit, LoadUp provides junk removal and bulk item pickup across Austin and the surrounding metro with same-day and next-day availability. No 3-per-year cap, no separate appointment for every material type, no 5:30 AM deadline to hit. Loaders can carry items out from inside your home, regardless of what floor they’re on.
LoadUp runs 20-30% below what most junk removal companies charge for comparable work in Austin, and offers a price match guarantee for any written quote for the same service.
