Since July 2022, Cattaraugus County has taken construction and demolition debris only at the Salamanca Transfer Station, and those loads must be weighed. Other stations allow two tied-off bags of C&D, but Allegany is the one station that takes none.
From March 16 through May 14, New York bans residential brush burning in towns with fewer than 20,000 people, and that includes Allegany. The ban falls right when winter storm limbs pile up. The Allegany Transfer Station takes clean yard waste, up to five 30-gallon bags a day.
Freon units are on the Allegany Transfer Station's not-accepted list, along with metal. Federal rules require the refrigerant to be recovered before these appliances are scrapped, so plan on taking them to a county station that lists Freon units.
The Allegany Transfer Station does not accept bulky items. That means furniture, mattresses, porcelain fixtures, doors, windows, pallets, hot tubs, and truck caps, even though the station sits right in the village. These items must go to a county station that lists bulky items.
The Allegany Transfer Station accepts electronics but limits drop-off to one CRT or LCD per day, and it does not take cellphones. New York has banned putting covered electronics in the trash since 2015, so a large cleanout may take several trips.
