San Diego Bulk Item Disposal: Why the City Doesn’t Offer Free Pickup & What To Do Instead

By Joel McRae  |  Published: September 2026

San Diego has no free, on-demand bulk item pickup. Put a sofa at the curb on a regular trash day and it’ll still be there when you get home. Unlike most major cities, there’s no city crew that shows up for large items on request.

The City paused its planned curbside bulk pickup program in June 2026 to keep the new Solid Waste Management Fee from climbing higher. For now, residents have two main paths: Community Cleanup events organized by City Council district, or a self-haul trip to the Miramar Landfill on Convoy Street. Both work. One requires timing, the other requires a vehicle large enough to carry whatever you need to haul.

California’s state programs do make some items free regardless. Mattresses are free to drop off at Miramar’s dedicated collection site Monday through Friday. Electronics can be dropped off for free on Saturdays at the HHW Transfer Facility next door (with an appointment).

Here’s how each option works, what it costs, and when hiring a private junk removal service makes more sense.

Why San Diego doesn’t have free bulk item pickup

The City of San Diego’s Environmental Services FAQ is direct about it: a citywide on-demand bulky item pickup program was planned but paused by City Council in June 2026. The reason was cost. The City wants to keep the new Solid Waste Management Fee, added in July 2025, as low as possible for residents.

What this means right now: do not leave large items at the curb outside of a sanctioned Community Cleanup event. Illegal dumping is actively enforced in San Diego.

WasteFreeSD.org is the City’s endorsed regional directory for San Diego residents. Search by item type and it returns donation sites, recycling programs, and disposal options near you, including programs in neighboring cities. Visit wastefreesd.org before deciding on a disposal path.

San Diego Community Cleanup events: the free curbside option

Community Cleanup events are the only free curbside bulk item collection in the City of San Diego. They’re organized by City Council district and happen periodically, not on demand.

How they work: residents in an upcoming cleanup zone receive a flyer in advance with the pickup date and accepted items. If you don’t receive a flyer, do not put items out. Items set out without a confirmed event will be treated as illegal dumping.

  • Contact San Diego’s Environmental Services Department (ESD) to ask about upcoming events in your neighborhood.
  • Check upcoming events at sandiego.gov/environmental-services or through the free Get It Done app
  • When an event is scheduled for your area, follow the specific accepted items and setout instructions on your flyer

Community Cleanups work well for routine disposal, but they don’t help much if you’re on a deadline. PCS moves, estate cleanouts, and move-out dates rarely line up with the next scheduled event.

Miramar Landfill San Diego: hours, fees, and self-haul rules

When the timing doesn’t align with a Community Cleanup event, the Miramar Landfill is the reliable self-haul option. It accepts household furniture, yard debris, and general refuse from City residents for a fee.

  • Address: 5180 Convoy St., San Diego, CA 92111 (north of State Route 52)
  • Hours: Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 4 PM; self-dumping vehicles accepted until 4:30 PM
  • Closed: Sundays; New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas
  • Payment: Checks (payable to City Treasurer), credit cards, and debit cards are accepted (cash is no longer accepted as of July 2026)
  • Fees: Flat-rate by vehicle type and load; see the current fee schedule at sandiego.gov/environmental-services/miramar/fees
  • Proof of residency: Required for City of San Diego disposal rates (driver’s license, current vehicle registration, or utility bill)

What can’t go in with regular trash at Miramar

Electronics (TVs, computers, monitors), appliances, and household hazardous materials cannot enter the landfill with a standard load. They must be dropped off separately at the HHW Transfer Facility at 5161 Convoy St., described in the section below.

Construction and demolition debris

Construction and demolition debris (concrete, drywall, lumber, roofing) is accepted at Miramar but under a separate C&D rate structure. For more detail, visit sandiego.gov/environmental-services/recycling/cd.

Free mattress disposal in San Diego: the Miramar drop-off site

California’s mattress stewardship law funds a free statewide recycling program, and San Diego has a dedicated drop-off site at the Miramar complex. The City’s Mattress Collection Site has taken in over 51,000 mattresses since it opened.

  • Address: 5161 Convoy St., San Diego, CA 92111 (east side of the Miramar Landfill entrance, next to the HHW Transfer Facility)
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 3 PM
  • Closed: Saturdays and Sundays
  • Cost: Free
  • No drop-off limit
  • Accepts: Mattresses and box springs
  • Condition: Must not be severely damaged, wet, twisted, frozen, soiled, or infested with bedbugs

For South Bay and East County residents, the Otay Landfill (1700 Maxwell Rd., Chula Vista) also accepts mattresses free through the same program, with a limit of 5 per day. Find additional drop-off locations at byebyemattress.com/san-diego-mattress-disposal/.

California retailers are required to offer take-back when delivering a new mattress, so it’s worth asking before loading an old mattress in the car yourself. For mattresses that need to be carried out of a bedroom or storage area before they reach any drop-off site, LoadUp can help handle the carrying and disposal for you.

Free electronics disposal in San Diego

Electronics and household hazardous materials can’t go to the landfill with regular household trash, and they don’t need to, because the City operates a free drop-off facility next door to the landfill.

The Miramar Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility is free for City of San Diego residents, with an appointment required.

  • Address: 5161 Convoy St., San Diego, CA 92111
  • Hours: Saturdays, 9 AM to 3 PM (closed holidays)
  • Appointment required: Schedule at sandiego.gov/environmental-services/ep/hazardous or call 858-694-7000
  • Limit: 15 gallons or 125 lbs of chemical waste per visit
  • Electronics accepted: TVs, computers, monitors, cell phones, printers, and video game consoles
  • HHW accepted: Paint (oil-based), batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs

Mobile HHW events are also held throughout the year at neighborhood locations including Balboa Park (Inspiration Parking Lot, corner of Park Blvd. and Presidents Way). Same requirements as the Miramar facility. Check the current event calendar at sandiego.gov.

For electronics that need to come out of a home office or storage room before getting to a drop-off site, LoadUp carries items from inside and routes covered electronics to the appropriate recycling program. Major retailers including Best Buy and Apple also accept electronics for recycling in-store, no appointment needed.

Chula Vista, Oceanside & San Diego County bulk item pickup

Many residents searching for “San Diego bulk item pickup” actually live in a separately incorporated city within San Diego County: Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside, El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, or Escondido. Each has its own waste program, and most are more generous than the City of San Diego’s current setup.

WasteFreeSD.org lists the bulk item pickup programs for all incorporated cities in San Diego County. Most offer two free bulky item pickups per year with up to six items each, arranged through the city’s own hauler. Check your specific city’s program before assuming the City of San Diego rules apply.

For private junk removal services across the South Bay and North County, LoadUp serves Chula Vista and Oceanside with same-day and next-day availability.

The pattern across all San Diego County cities: every city runs its own program, and none of them share a hotline or schedule with the City of San Diego. Check WasteFreeSD.org or call your city’s public works department before making a trip or setting anything at the curb.

When to call a private junk removal service

Miramar is reliable and Community Cleanup events are free, but both fall short in the same situations.

Booking with a private hauler might be a better fit if:

  • Items are inside your home, garage, or storage unit. Community Cleanup events and Miramar both require you to haul items yourself.
  • You’re on a PCS timeline or move-out deadline that doesn’t align with the next Community Cleanup event in your district
  • You have a full household cleanout: furniture, appliances, outdoor gear, garage items, and the volume exceeds what one or two Miramar trips can handle efficiently
  • You have renovation or construction debris that needs to move quickly
  • You don’t have a vehicle that can handle the load or make multiple landfill runs
  • You want items sorted for donation before any disposal happens

When the city’s options don’t fit the timeline, LoadUp provides junk removal across San Diego with same-day and next-day availability. No Miramar trip required, no waiting for a Community Cleanup event, no requirement that items be at the curb first. Loaders carry items from inside your home, whether that’s a garage cleanout, a beach house full of sun-damaged furniture, or a PCS move where the clock is running.

For items still in usable condition, LoadUp routes eligible pieces to donation partners including Goodwill San Diego, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and the Salvation Army before anything goes to disposal.

LoadUp runs 20-30% below what most junk removal companies charge for comparable work in San Diego, and offers a price match guarantee for any written quote for the same service.
