The cost of renting a dumpster and disposing of its contents can be varied throughout the industry due to the different sizes of dumpsters available and the fees for disposal in different areas.
Before you rent a dumpster, you should make sure to do all of your research and check out the competitors pricing. This will help you to avoid problems and hidden costs that can give you a big headache and slow down the project you are working on.
What dumpster size is perfect for a typical homeowner project?
Dumpsters come in many sizes and have the capacity to hold as much as six tons of waste. The 40 yard dumpster is most common at huge construction sites, but is not suitable for smaller commercial jobs. While this is the standard size offered at many dumpster rental companies, it is not intended for residential use.
The 15 cubic yard dumpster is perfect for all residential projects
Take your location into account
The cost of renting a dumpster and disposing of its contents can vary widely from state to state, but when you are renting a dumpster for residential use, you may not have a lot of room to spare. This makes the 15 yard dumpster best for residential projects. It is usually best to place your dumpster rental in your driveway so that you can keep your grass looking fresh.
Think about the extra fees
You can begin to incur additional fees based on the weight of the trash inside your dumpster or if you need to order additional swap outs. When deciding on the 15 yard dumpster vs getting a larger size, it can still be more affordable to order the smaller dumpster, add-in swap out fees if you happen to fill the dumpster before your rental period is over.
You may think ordering the larger dumpster is the way to go to pay less, but a larger dumpster typically doesn’t hold that much more weight, so you would end up paying more for the dumpster rental plus still paying for additional swap outs.
So what size dumpster do I need for construction projects?
The size of the dumpster you need depends on the type of construction, renovation, or clean up you are doing. A contractor building a new shopping center is probably going with a larger dumpster while when building a new standalone office building could use a smaller dumpster.
Consider the 15 yard dumpster for all-sized projects
Factor in the size of your project
For residential uses such as a bathroom remodel, landscaping project, kitchen or basement remodel, the best size dumpsters is the 15 yard. If you are gutting your home and redoing the landscaping, the 15 yard should still be in contention due to the increased cost of dumpster rental the larger size you rent.
Swap-out (pulling) fees
Overfilling a dumpster will result in extra fees, but with a smaller dumpster the price outweighs the cost of a larger dumpster. You may have to put your service on hold for one hour but it is worth the more affordable price.
Things to consider before deciding on your dumpster
1. Where should I put the dumpster?
Every city and community has rules and regulations regarding the use of dumpsters. You will need to check with your city and your HOA, if you live in a community with one. Most likely, you will need to obtain a permit from the city or county you live in to have a dumpster rental on or near your property.
Avoid these dumpster placement mistakes
Big no-nos for placing your dumpster include impeding traffic on the street, or blocking access to a utility box, fire hydrant, or your neighbor’s driveway. Some cities and HOAs limit the size of dumpster you can have (bigger ones can damage the street beneath them) and how long you can have it, especially if it is in view of the public.
Check with your rental company
Be sure to find these things out ahead of time or choose a dumpster rental company who will help you stay within city and community guidelines. This will help you avoid serious hassles and headaches with your project.
2. How long can I keep the dumpster?
Most rental companies offer weekly and monthly rental options. To rent a 15-yard dumpster with LoadUp for 3 days it will cost $295 and an additional $10 per day.
Many companies will offer you a small discount for a monthly rental and jack up the price if you need the dumpster for longer. Be sure about how long you will need the dumpster and inquire about any fees if you need to extend your rental for longer. You don’t want surprise fees that ruin your budget.

- 5 days: $315
- 6 days: $325
- 7 days: $335

3. What can I put in the dumpster?
If you put prohibited items in your dumpster, expect to get hit with big fees to dispose of them. In general, normal construction and renovation trash, such as drywall, carpet, wire, roofing materials, wood pieces, wiring and such, are allowed.
If you are not sure about something you want to place in your dumpster, ask! Sometimes you can put a prohibited item in the dumpster with the addition of an extra fee to dispose of it.
The weight of the trash and debris in your rental dumpster is important because over a certain amount you may be hit with extra fees. Be sure to ask upfront what can and cannot be placed in your rental dumpster and the maximum weight allowed.
Most dumpster rental companies prohibit any hazardous wastes.
Line up your dumpster rental in advance
Don’t scrap your kitchen remodel because renting a dumpster seems too complicated and fraught with hidden headaches and fees just waiting to ruin everything. You can make your life simpler by choosing the right dumpster rental company.
Find one that is familiar with your area, can help you determine the size you will need, and talk you through what you can and can’t put in the dumpster. They will help you obtain the proper permits from your city or county.
Use a company that offers transparent pricing so you won’t get smacked with unexpected fees, preferably a dumpster rental company that is willing to work with you should you need the dumpster longer than you thought and one that offers a reasonable daily fee instead of insisting on charging you for another week if all you need it for is a couple more days.
Choose LoadUp’s dumpster rental service
Consider a dumpster rental company that also offers junk removal. If you have an old bathtub or stove that needs to go, having it hauled away instead of putting it in your dumpster can actually save you money. You can have mattresses, furniture, large appliances, and the like picked up and taken to a recycle center, in some cases, instead of a landfill. Then you can use the 15 yard dumpster to hold the rest of your project’s waste and debris.
