In June 2024, Detroit moved to weekly collection for everything: trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk items. For residents who remember the old biweekly schedule and its missed pickups, the difference was immediate. For anyone newer to the city, the current program is genuinely simple: bulk items go at the curb on your regular trash day, no scheduling required.
There are limits to what the standard pickup covers though, and there’s a separate city service for loads that exceed them. And if you’re in Dearborn, Livonia, Warren, or Southfield, Detroit’s program doesn’t apply to your address. Wayne County runs no residential collection of its own, and every suburb operates separately.
Here’s how Detroit’s bulk item pickup works, how the suburbs compare, and what to do when the standard options don’t fit what you need.
In this guide:
How Detroit’s bulk item pickup works
The City of Detroit Department of Public Works collects bulk items weekly on your regular trash collection day. As of June 2024, all solid waste services (trash, recycling, bulk, and yard waste) run on the same weekly schedule.
What qualifies for standard curbside pickup
- Items must total less than 2 cubic yards per collection day
- Each individual item, bag, or bundle must weigh less than 50 pounds
- Accepted items include furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpeting, and clothing
- Carpet must be cut into strips up to 4 feet wide, rolled and tied into bundles
- Items over 1,000 pounds and hazardous materials are never accepted curbside
Setout rules
- Place items at the curbline in front of your own property, not in front of vacant lots or neighboring homes
- Set out after 6 PM the evening before collection and by 7 AM on collection day
- Items totaling more than 2 cubic yards or weighing more than 1,000 pounds will not be collected and can result in a fine of up to $1,500 for the first offense
Finding your collection day
- Online: detroitmi.gov/webapp/find-your-waste-pickup-schedule
- Text reminders: Text your address to (313) 800-7905 for weekly reminders the evening before pickup
- East and Southwest Detroit: Priority Waste (855) 927-8365
- Westside Detroit: Waste Management (844) 233-8764
Annual fee and building eligibility
Detroit residents pay for solid waste services through their property tax bill: $260 per year in 2026. Senior citizen discount: $125. Properties with 5 or more units are not eligible for city curbside collection and must arrange private hauling.

The Paid Pickup service for larger loads
When a load exceeds the standard 2-cubic-yard limit, the City of Detroit offers a fee-based collection service. This is also the right path for construction and renovation debris, which isn’t accepted through standard curbside pickup.
How to request
- Online: Fill out the Paid Pickup Bulk Collection Request Form at detroitmi.gov
- Phone: DPW Solid Waste Division at (313) 876-0004
How it works
- A DPW employee responds within 1 business day with a removal estimate
- Fee: $40 per cubic yard based on the size and weight of debris
- Payment: credit card, cashier’s check, or money order
- DPW removes the debris after payment is received
What’s accepted and what isn’t
Most types of debris are accepted through the Paid Pickup service: branches, construction and renovation materials, couches, and larger volumes of the items that also qualify for curbside. One hard rule: debris must be accessible from the front curb. DPW will not remove debris from garages, alleyways, or yards. If the items are inside your home or in storage areas, they need to be brought to the curb before DPW can help.
For construction and demolition debris that’s already at the curb and within a manageable volume, the Paid Pickup service is a practical option. For interior renovation debris or large-scale project cleanups, a private hauler typically makes more sense.
Three free drop-off yards in Detroit
Detroit residents can self-haul bulk waste and yard waste to three free citizen drop-off centers. No appointment needed. Bring a valid driver’s license, state ID, or Detroit ID. Limit of 1,000 pounds of bulk waste and 4 tires per household per day.
Not accepted at the citizen drop-off centers: household garbage, remodeling and construction debris, car or truck parts, hazardous waste. No commercial vehicles.
| Yard | Address | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| DPW Davison Yard | 8221 W. Davison | Mon–Sat: 8 AM–6 PM (Apr–Oct); 8 AM–4 PM (Nov–Mar) |
| DPW Southfield Yard | 12255 Southfield Rd | Mon–Sat: 8 AM–6 PM (Apr–Oct); 8 AM–4 PM (Nov–Mar) |
| DPW J. Fons Yard | 6451 E. McNichols | Mon–Fri: 8 AM–4 PM; Sat: 8 AM–12 PM (year-round) |
The J. Fons Yard is the only yard that accepts construction debris and commercial vehicles. Contact the yard directly at (313) 893-6656 for current fee information before hauling a load.
Basements, estates, and what the city can’t access
Metro Detroit has one of the largest concentrations of older single-family homes in the Midwest. Most were built between 1920 and 1970 with full basements. Not crawl spaces, but separate finished and unfinished floors used as storage for decades. When a house sells, an older resident moves to assisted living, or an estate is settled, the basement typically contains furniture, appliances, clothing, tools, and accumulated household goods going back 30 or 40 years.
The city’s programs cover this situation partially. The standard 2-cubic-yard weekly limit is well short of what a full basement cleanout generates. The Paid Pickup service covers larger loads, but your items must be at the front curb first. DPW won’t come inside the home, the basement, or the garage for any program. Getting items from inside the house to the curb is entirely the homeowner’s responsibility before DPW can help with the rest.
For items in usable condition, several Metro Detroit nonprofits offer free donation pickup:
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore: Accepts furniture, appliances, and home goods in good condition; free donation pickup available for larger items. Multiple Metro Detroit locations.
- Salvation Army: Free pickup of clothing, furniture, and household items. Schedule at satruck.org or call 1-800-SA-TRUCK.
- Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit: Donation pickup available; goodwilldetroit.org.
Donation programs require items to be clean and functional. Damaged, stained, or broken items don’t qualify.
For estate cleanouts and full-basement clearances where volume, timing, and interior access are all factors, a private hauler that carries items from inside the home is the practical solution.

Dearborn, Livonia, Warren, and the suburbs
Wayne County provides no residential solid waste collection. Every municipality in Metro Detroit runs its own program through its own contractor. Someone in Dearborn searching for Detroit’s bulk pickup rules is looking at the wrong program.
Dearborn
Dearborn’s current contractor is Priority Waste, which took over from GFL Environmental in July 2024. The city’s website notes that the transition has caused service interruptions across trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk pickup. Residents experiencing issues should contact Priority Waste directly at (855) 927-8365 or check dearborn.gov for current service status.
When running normally: bulk pickup goes on the same day as regular trash, up to 5 items per week with an annual maximum of 20. Excessive pickups beyond the annual cap carry a minimum $100 charge. For items a private hauler handles faster, LoadUp junk removal in Dearborn.
Livonia
Livonia’s bulk pickup is weekly on your regular collection day with no scheduling required, limited to 2 large items per week. Refrigerators and freezers must have all doors removed before placement at the curb. Livonia also operates a resident dump site at 32300 Glendale Avenue, open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 6 PM (April through December). Accepted: furniture, carpeting, household items, and auto parts. Tires: up to 10, $5 each, cash only. For private hauling in Livonia, LoadUp offers junk removal in Livonia.
Warren
Warren runs its own separate bulk pickup program with its own schedule, completely independent of Detroit’s. Carpet must be cut, rolled, and tied in 4-foot lengths before setout. For the current collection schedule and hauler contact, check warrenmi.gov. For private hauling, LoadUp serves Warren.
The principle across all Metro Detroit suburbs: every city has different rules, different haulers, and different limits. When in doubt, check your city’s official website or call your assigned hauler directly before putting anything at the curb.
Wayne County household hazardous waste events
Wayne County hosts free household hazardous waste collection events throughout the year for all Wayne County residents, including Detroit. Paint, chemicals, batteries, motor oil, and similar materials cannot go in any curbside program.
Remaining 2026 events:
- August 29, 2026: Westland Shopping Center – 8 AM to 1 PM
- October 10, 2026: Wayne County Community College – 8 AM to 1 PM
Wayne County also offers a Recycling Voucher Program for proper HHW disposal at 3600 Commerce Court, Building E, Wayne, MI 48184. Open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. Call (734) 326-5708 for details.
When the city program doesn’t cover it
Detroit’s weekly pickup handles most routine situations without any scheduling. Things get more complicated when the items are inside the house, the volume exceeds the standard limit, or the timeline doesn’t fit what DPW can offer.
- Items are inside the basement, garage, or upper floor. DPW won’t enter your home for any program
- The volume exceeds the Paid Pickup scope or the turnaround time doesn’t fit the timeline
- You’re dealing with a full estate cleanout where volume, condition, and interior access are all in play
- Your building has 5 or more units and isn’t eligible for city service
- You have construction or renovation debris that needs same-day removal
- You’re in Dearborn, Livonia, or Warren and need a single service without navigating your city’s separate program
When DPW can’t get there, or what needs to go is still inside the house, LoadUp provides junk removal across Detroit, including bulk item pickup, across the metro with same-day and next-day availability. No cubic-yard limits, no 50-pound-per-item restrictions, no requirement that items be at the curb first. Loaders will carry items out from wherever they are, whether it’s in the basement, second floor, garage, or storage room.
